Im looking to buy a savage no4 mk1*. Its listed for $275 and is import marked and not numbers matching. Problem is that the band where the serial number is has been hit with a wire brush or something. Other than that, the rifle looks beautiful save some dings in the wood. Ive been trying to find some prices for these on gunbroker and the like and there just really isnt many of them that I can find that actually sell (seems like a lot of listing are priced pretty high and dont end up selling). So is this price unreasonable considering? Thanks!

good price for a nice looking lead lease of american history. At lest your band has something on it, most rifles made by GB / Canada have extremely light strikes, i cant make out the year or maker on my no4. I paid 230$ for it. So if the bore is in good shape and there are no other major issues, i say its worth it.

Found one, it went for 350$

Seems high for a mismatched import-marked rifle.

I paid $125 for my matching example (also import marked).

I sold mine a few years back for $225 and it was just "S" marked. Overall condition was on the low end of very good.

Wow how long ago, and if it was resent you got a deal in a half.

Four years ago, IIRC. I've only really been collecting C&R's since 2007. However, this one was an outlier - I knew it was a steal. A good condition No. 4 Mk. I* should run you no more than $250 for a matching example; mismatched more like $200.

It's one of the early Mk. I rifles - 6 groove barrel, Savage-marked micrometer sight. It had a different (more worn) stock on it when I bought it, but it was perfectly serviceable, I just didn't like the mismatched wood look.

Original look:

The bolt that's in there in that picture is an early Savage bolt I bought to display it with. The later slab-side cocking-piece bolt in the newer picture is the matched bolt.

From what I can gather though, lend lease savages made in the US are worth slightly more. Either way Ive decided to pass on this one. The wire brushing just bothers me too much.

Does anybody have production numbers on Savage No.4s? I've been told that they made more than all the British arsenals combined. I see them everywhere, yet some people seem to think they're worth their weight in gold.

$275 is a bit much for a mismatched Savage, it would need Savage furniture and some other Savage parts. If the import marking is on the end of the barrel and unobtrusive then it's a non issue. If it's on the side of the receiver like many are now days it's butt ugly and I would pass.

Savage-Stevens Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusett produced approx 1,236,000 rifles. Approx the first 132,000 produced had the standard bolt release(MkI) then the remainder are MkI*, war time expedient bolt release.

The US marked Savage does bring a premium in the USA if in correct condition.

This 1943 Savage MkI*, 76C series, turned out to be a very good shooter. I added the S&K mount and Weaver K2.5. I initially paid $200 for this one, all savage marked, good buy.

This 1942 Savage-Stevens No4 MkI (no star) 7C series, is one of my prize Enfields. Purchased as a sporter it's been returned to correct condition. I located a Savage fore-end since these pic's, also found a S marked back sight. Those are hard to find! I initially paid $100 for this one and have another $150+ in getting it correct. I would not sell for less than $600.
