Just picked up a cheap 98K, bore is poor. Where is a good place to send it for a new barrel?

Looking for a 308 conversion but retain the original look. I don't want to spend a lot. Thanks

Not for a "new" barrel, but..... replacement! I hope this helps.

R-guns carries barreled actions. Not in .308, but why wouldnt you want 8mm Mauser anyway ? Cheaper ammo.

I'm not sure who it is now...not copes...can't remember, but, they have new norwegian 308 98k barrels. Supposedly, little to no modification required. The norwegians made some 7.62 barrels for captured mausers after WW2. IM me and I'll look up the source. Planning to do the swap when I can find a sub $300 98k. I think member Fat McNasty's shop does fudd stuff on mauser actions. I can vouch for his work on pistols anyway.

II believe is Coles Distributing that has the .308 barrels. I tried to order one online and it didn't work. I need to call them up and order one next week.

what is the condition of the rest of the rifle?

the reason i ask, is if it is matching numbers / good condition, just a shitty bore,

maybe you could sell that K98 to a collector who doesnt shoot and doesnt care about bore condition-

then it can stay a "collectable" rifle- and you could even profit from it and buy a different rifle.

just a thought.

I bought 4 of the Norwegian K98k barrels from Coles Distributing. They are $99.99 each 2/$189.99 + shipping

They went in very nice and 3 required nothing the fourth a couple turns on the reamer for the perfect head space.

These are contoured for the German K98k and look exactly like the 8MM barrel.

I agree if the entire gun is completely matching put it on GB in the C&R section and iyt will bring big money if all is original even with a poor bore.

I used Oxpho-Blue to get a good K98k color match. Heat the cleaned metal with a torch and use a tooth brush to wipe it on and that is it, you are done.

308 is simply a more pleasant round to shoot, less recoil and far more options on ammo

A couple of shots of my 37 Berlin Lubecker. This vet bring back was all match except the bolt but the barrel was bad and the vet gouged out all the Swastikas. Sweet shooter and notice the Oxpho-Blued barrel how it looks right with the old blue (and yes, I have since installed the site base screw)

Gunsmiths - well, most gunsmiths I've known over the years, know how to install a barrel on a Mauser 98 action.

98 Mausers are actually quite common. Probably THE most commonly worked-on military bolt action in the entire U.S.A.

Your local Yellow pages probably lists gunsmiths.

Many gunsmiths offer re-bluing services too.

Not matching. It is a Russian capture but has most of the stamps intact.

That looks like a good plan.

Those barrels look like the answer I was looking for. Thanks

Mine isn't an RC but only the receiver and barrel match. It looks alot like Wulfmann's and my metal may have more finish left. The stock and hardware are in good to V. good condition but the barrel is a sewer pipe. The muzzle swallows an 8mm cartridge with no signs of being counterbored and every round I've fired through it has key holed.

Update. I ran a 45 degree crowning tool I used in some Garands I had in the past in the end of the barrel.

It will keep them around 1" at 50 yards with Turk surplus. I think I will let the original barrel stay on. Maybe not as worn out as I thought, just broken in very well.

That's very good at 50 yards with iron sight. Especially junky Turk ammo that splits neck every other round.

I was suprised that it shot that well with me behind the trigger. I am used to shooting 5.56 and it took a few magazines to get used to the recoil and muzzle blast of the 8mm.

Our range has baffles which triple the blast effect. Once I settled in and focused it grouped well.
