Arisaka Monopod Value
Does anyone know the going rate for a monopod for a Japanese Arisaka type 99? I have a rifle with the aircraft sights and a dust cover but would like an original monopod to finish it.
I have found one for sale and would like to know what it's actually worth. Thanks!
Depending upon which series your rifle is it may not have had a monopod installed when it ws produced.
Mine is an earlier Arisaka with none of the features of a last ditch rifle. I believe it has the correct barrel band for a monopod.
A lot of Arisakas had the band but no monopod. The series and the arsenal are what dictates whether it had one or not. I have a seventh series Kokura that has the band, but a monopod was never installed.
Well in any case, I'd like to know what they go for regardless. Thanks
Both Sarco and Numrich used to offer various Arisaka bits and pieces, some original, some repro, including repro monopods. Check 'em out to at least get an idea on price for a repro as a reference point.
That said, how would one tell a repro and an original apart? It's just bent wire, and no markings unless there is some subtle difference in the bend. Just saying that it might pay you to make sure that if you pay the price for an original that you are actually getting an original.. PS, don't forget the pivot fastener.
ETA: Have a glance at Jap section of IMA; they have some decent repro stuff:

I've had a Type 99 with AA lead bars and Monopod for years. a Tokyo Juki Kogyo Arsenal with Imperial Crysanthemum intact , Bayonet, cleaning rod, just the dust cover missing. I've never been able to detect any markings on the monopod wire. I know the rifle was brought back by a Vet I knew so I dont believe the monopod is a repro.

I ended up purchasing the original monopod; I purchased it from a collector friend who is parting out a mismatched rifle with a ground mum. He had several repros to examine side by side with the one I purchased and an original from a bring back rifle he owns. The machining for the band parts (pivot fastener) and the screws was different on the originals, as was the finish on the wire of the monopod itself. Had a very nice patina look to it that matched the finish on the rifle it came from. I paid a good bit for it, but from what I can tell it is the real deal.
Authentic monopods are currently selling between $125-$300 on ebay. Price seems to depend on the condition/day. If you are trying to make your Arisaka as original as possible try and locate the correct type of monopod for it as there are two different foot pad styles depending on the maker.
This link will show you the two different foot pad styles. http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?246125-Kokura-Monopod&highlight=monopod
Authentic monopods do in fact have a marking that can help you identify if it is authentic or not. Look for a mark on the curved part of the monopod mount. The one I have on my Arisaka has a "W" or "M" mark on the monopod mount. I have also heard of the monopods having a mark on the foot pad, but I cannot confirm that this is accurate. Hope that helps.
