100yds today using surplus ammo

I bought a .87 front sight off of ebay and now it hits where you aim it instead of 8" high.

That's about what I would expect for military surplus. Some better. Some worse. Unfortunately, M39s are surrounded by the myth that they should all shoot one hole groups. I've found this to be far from the truth.

I plead the 5th!

When I go back to the range again next week I'll do a 5 shot group, this was my first time shooting it with the new front sight, amazing what a difference $18 makes

Ah, gotta bust your balls somewhere, it ain't no fun if you shoot a good group and everyone say that's good, it kinda ruins it. You can always do better

so when you ordered a .87 tall sight was it just a lucky guess that it was the exact height you needed, or did you plan to file it down if needed, or... did you measure how high it was shooting and use that to calculate which height you needed ?

The rough front sight post height can be calculated (sorry, all of the measurements are in millimeters. As an European, I am sort of handicapped in such way that I can only use metric units):

- Let's assume that your gun shoots eg. 280 millimeters over the point of aim @ 100 meters (100 000 millimeters).
- Let's assume that the current front sight is 7,6 mm high
- Let's assume, that the distance between the front and rear sights is 575 millimeters

Formula:

280mm x 575 mm / 100 000 mm = 1,61 millimeters (how much taller the sight has to be)
7,6 + 1,6= 9,2 (needed height).

Off course every gun is different, and this is a rough estimate, but it should get you pretty close.

Not really. Thats a good starting group for sure. Try using some Sierra .311 174gr Matchkings and you'll see wonders occur.
