Ive asked 3 different people and gotten 3 different answers.....
going shooting in about an hour, taking a 12ga and a .22, should I leave my bag of 1/2 lb tannerite targets at home or take them with?
Have been told a .22 wont set them off
have been told a .22 will set them off
have been told a .22 will sometimes set them off
dont want to waste them, so can anybody help me out?

.22 will not set off normal Tannerite or mixed home made. It takes a rifle round well above 2000 feet per second.

There are blends that will ignite with a .22lr, both commercial and home made, but there are additional ingredients.

Personally I don't like the idea of less stable Tannerite, which is basically what the .22lr blend is.

Take an AR w/ 55gr ammo, or an AK w/ 122ish gr ammo and it will be fine with a direct hit.

Don't mix it unless you have something powerful enough to set it off.

Leave your tannerite at home. If you figure out that your 22 doesn't set it off, it'll be too late.

From experience I have found that .22s will not set off Tannerite, in fact .223s will only set Tannerite off occasionally. Tannerite claims any centerfire cartridge will detonate Tannerite. When I had multiple failures with .223 from an AR-15 at 25 yards and a direct hit on the bullseye target stuck to the jar, I emailed Tannerite to discuss the failures to detonate. I recieved no reply, not even an acknowledgement. Needless to say, I don't buy Tannerite anymore. Poor customer service.

A guy at the range tried shooting Tannerite with a Savaage bolt action 17 HMR and would not set it off. My 6.5 Grendel created a loud boom and lots of smoke. A real crowd pleaser.

out of a dz attempts I have had .22lr(cci mini mags) set it off once,m193 set off what I saved and repackaged from the other attempts.
I wouldn't waste it with a .22

Joebobs sells a version specifically for .22's that I've had good luck with using bulk high velocity ammo with. Other than that, the regular stuff is rarely set off by .22lr. If you want to try it, just mix a small amount in a pill bottle and see what happens. That way you don't waste a large amount. I've never had a problem with 5.56 though.

Interesting. I have also noticed that a 17 will not set off tannerite, even the 22 cal sensitive variety. It just hits it and makes a cloud of dust.

Other observations:

The 22 sensitive kind will explode when stuck to a metal plate target using the round self adhesive red target/containers and you hit the metal plate within a few inches of the tannerite with a 223 round.

The 22 sensitive kind will explode another target if a target is placed within about a foot of one that explodes. Im talking about the little red self adhesive cups that acts as the target, not a big quantity target.

Tannerite comes in two flavors one for higher velocities and one for low. The low velocity ignition Tannerite will say for use with .22. It will ignite with a much lower FPS than the standard.

The packaging will be clear.

You can make your own binary explosive for about a buck a pound.
When I get the hankering to go boom, I make my own now.

Yeah, yeah... What he said... I'll take a PM if you're not interested in posting the recipe.

I have set off tannerite with a 17HMR.

I have also had tannerite fail to go off when shot with 8mm mauser, 30-06, and 223. Finally 220 Swift set it off.

I think 2000 fps is the minimum and I take great pains to keep tannerite dry but there was something going on with a few batches I had.
