870 Mag Extension Tubes, and other upgrades for my 870P

Just picked up a used 870P for $250. Looks factory with the exception of the side saddle. Still has original wood stock which is in great shape but will probably be replaced with a Speedfeed and a Surefire forend. Several were traded in from a local PD.

Anyway, looking at a magazine extension. How are the Advanced Technology ones I found on Brownell's website compared to factory Remington? Looking at about a $60 difference.

Any recommendations for a set of Ghost Ring Sights? From what I've read I'll have to have the receiver drilled and tapped. Is that correct?

Any other recommendations for a forend besides the Surefire? I think I saw one from Insight in a recent American Rifleman.

This gun will primarily be for some 3-gun fun and home defense.

The ATI and TacStar are pure garbage. The factory Remingtons are good, but for just a little more you can get Nordic, Vang Comp or Wilson. I prefer the Vang Comp myself.

You can put on a banded front sight and all you would need to do is get the rear drilled and tapped. XS Sights, Vang Comp, Trijicon, and LPA make a ghost ring setup, I have the LPA sights on my 870.

Any other recommendations for a forend besides the Surefire? I think I saw one from Insight in a recent American Rifleman. Eotech also make a forend for the 870 now called the IFL. Although it doesn't have the track record the Surefire one because it is brand new.

Congrats on your purchase! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get that shotgun? If they are close to me, I might have to go buy one cause that is a good deal. See red above for on topic discussion.

I love my Knox recoil reducing stock. I have the top folding wire stock also.

Check out the vang comp extension, it is the most solid one I have seen. They make it in a stand off version too if you are interested in them. For ghost ring sights I went with lpa, just be prepared to at least double the cost of your gun then. I tried a couple different forends but settled with the surefire rail which I really like. I will probably give the magpul one a try when it comes out.

http://www.discountgunandammo.com/ in Provo had three from the Mapleton PD. The other two had some pitting on the receivers but were in overall good condition. Just noticed I mistyped the price, they were $250.

For a mag extension, I'd go Wilson all the way. Simple, rugged, reliable. Don't ever buy anything from Advanced Technology. There's a reason their stuff is priced cheap. As far as ghost right sights go, consider this: For the price of the sights themselves and the expense of having a gunsmith install them, you could get a brand new factory 18 inch police barrel with rifle sights on it. That way you still retain the ability to swap barrels for other purposes in the future if you so choose. I shoot much much better with the rifle sights than ghost rings. I've been through the process where you are now and the above is where I wound up. Factory remington police barrel with rifle sights, and a wilson combat mag extension. Now she's awesome.

I'm leaning towards the rifle sights for a number of reasons. I found an 18" parked barrel at Brownells for $155 with my discount. Anyone have one cheaper?

Try AIPtactical.com. I purchased a 18.5", improved cylinder choke, rifle sight, parkerized, remington factory barrel for $152 shipped. JD McGuire is a good guy to deal with, fast service and will answer your questions.
