Trying to make heads or tails of this. As long as the shotgun is over 26" in length, from end of barrel to end of stock, and barrel is 18" and above, this is completely fine? Gun in question is a 12ga single shot break open.

Now is the barrel measured from the end that contacts the area where the firing pin is housed or from the end of the bore (3in bore)

A rod is measured to 18" and the hammer is cocked/firing pin retracted. The rod is placed down the bore with the action closed. If the line on the rod falls below the horizon of the muzzle you have a legal 18" shotgun barrel.

Ah sorry I got your questions confused. For overall length its just a tape measure from the edge of the muzzle to the butt. I'd stick to 26.5" just to make sure.

So yes.

To measure OAL, I believe you are supposed to place the shotgun (or rifle) with the butt on the floor and the barrel against a wall vertically, then measure from the muzzle to the floor.

How do aftermarket pistol grips come into play?
I am new on these threads (going to P/U my new 870 Police on Sat.) so if this was already beat to death like the AOW/SBR stuff over on the AR Pistol/Rifle side......SORRY

Still has to be 26" over all but with an 18" barrel on a 870 you don't have to worry, you won't be able to get close to 26" even with a PGO stock.
