Thrid range visit with FN Tactical

I made my third range visit with the FN Tactical, and now I'm fully sold on the pistol. It shot wonderfully.

The brass in the face issue is gone, though I did get a couple of shells to the top of the hat with low power 230 grain loads. No big deal though. I fired a box of Federal 230s, and then some Hydrashocks, and some Horaday hollow points, with full mags, and with the Surefire X300 on, to give it a real world situation. No jams or issues at all.

The pistol is super accurate. Both in absolute and pratical aspects. My range has a plate lane, and I was mowing them down as easily as I do with my Ruger Mark II. And I'm pretty adverse to recoil too. Still, I was able to hit them every time I didn't do something drastically wrong with my trigger pull or sight picture.

I've finally come to a conculsion about the RMR. I'm keeping it. It's not that slam dunk just playing around with it at home - it seems to take longer actually to pick up the dot than just using irons. But at the range, it's a snap to use - maybe becuase you can easily keep both eyes open, and get a better field of view plus no eye strain from closing the weak eye.

I'm still fighting the oil on the RMR problem. I oil my guns. A lot. Some ot it's due to the salt air here in Houston, but mostly it's just what I've always done. So after a box of shells, the front of the RMR has oil drops, then oil smears, which really limit the sight picture through it. Since you can easily keep both eyes open it's not as big of a deal as say with a scope, but still, it's not good. I put some Rain X on it prior to this range visit, but it did not help. I guess it's just the nature of having a sight so close to the action. Maybe I'll field strip it at the range just before shooting and wipe down all the oil on the barrel and in the slide.

Plus it looks cool, and you can't put a value on that except priceless.

During range visit 1, I notieced the thread cap would get loose after 15-20 rounds, no matter how tight I screwed it on. So I followed some advice here and put a rubber on ring from a facuet project on it. Works like a charm. The rubber gets a bit under the cap and keeps it from vibrating loose during firing. No issues with the o-ring from the heat. I'd bought a big combo pack for about 4 bucks at the hardware store before for the facuet, and just rummeaded around till I found one. Or you could measure what size you need and get a couple.

For a double stack 45, it has very thin grips, and fits nicely in my medium sized hands.

No issues so far with the trigger pin working loose, though I'm keeping my eye on it.

Overall, it's a great pistol, and one of my favorite shooters. Now if I can just get a good leather holster for it. I'm working with a holster maker on one, and just about have it ready to go.

Cheesy gun photos follow.

Nice looking gun. I just picked up an FNX 9 and have found it to be the easiest shooting pistol that I own.

Judging by the plate rack I assume you're a member at Pearland Shooting Club, too. If you would like, send me an email the next time you're taking the 45 out to the range. I would like to compare and contrast the two pistols.

Yep, that's the PSC range. I really like the plate range.

I'm home in about a month, and will drop you a line then. I usually go to the range during the week, after lunch, when it's hot, and thus empty.

I had the same issue for about 300 or so rounds. Actually put two scratchs on my glasses. I can easily hold 2 to 3 inch groups offhand at 50 feet with it.

Never mind. I should have read the post first. It was about the RMR. And I agree with you.

Houston heat + salt air = rust if I don't give them the business with some oil. But I will wipe it down before I head to the range.

Do you have any trouble seeing the dot in bright sunlight and what size dot is it?

FWIW, I have the LED RMR with an 8 MOA dot and it is easily visible in bright sunlight.

I have heard that the dual illumination models get washed out in bright sunlight and wanted to actually ask someone that has used one for some feedback.

What's the filter on the x300?

The dot is the 9 moa amber one. I'd have prefered a red dot, but when I was looking for RMR's about a year ago there were none in red in the no battery model.

It seems nice and bright even in sunlight. It was clear at the range, 10-11 am, and I saw the dot just fine.

The cover is a Surefire red lense cover for similar sized lenses. I wanted a cover to protect the lense during range visits and practice, and this is the only one that will fit. I'd rather have a proper flip up cover like on a larger Surefire.
