Since the 1911 is a classic piece of military issue I want to do something cool for my best friend whos a Captain in the Army. He does not have a 1911 yet but I wanted to get him some 1911 grips inlayed with a set of Captains bars on one side and the Seal of the US Army on the other. Any one know a good manufacturer where I can find this or someone who could custom make these?

Hes currently deployed for 3 years to Japan so I have time to save up for a Colt 1911 for him when he gets back, but he can have the grips now, well in 2 months when I go over to visit.

I'm thinking white grips on a stainless 1911 would look killer for this idea.

I've heard good things about Wicked Grips: http://wickedgrips.com/

I'm sure they can make you a set of whatever you're looking for.

Good luck, and what an awesome friend you are.

If the material is ok, AlumaGrips does fantastic work.
You could get the laser engraved with the 1" circle. Bars on one side, logo on the other. You can specify type of checkering, thickness, etc.
I got my friend a pair with a logo of his laser engraved onto the black grips. The laser process takes the color off so it is a silver logo on a black grip.

Is this guy going to retire as a captain? He can't possibly get promoted to major in the next 3 years, while assigned to Japan?

If he is likely to get promoted, how about something like these? They're more generic, but would reflect the entire width of his service:

Hes been a Captain for about 2 years now but in Feb/March he finished his Captains course in the Army, however they promoted him while he was on deployment to Afghanistan. They only took over a year to send him to the Captains course once he got back. Hes talked about getting out of the Army. Hes been in for about 13-14 years now and started out as a Private in the 82nd and then went to College which is where I met him. So he only has been at his post in Japan since March and has recently taken command of the entire MP Battallion on base. So hes happy about the command and he also gets to do some SWAT work again, which was his first posting to Fort Carson when he was with the 4th BTSB 4th ID.

So hes got just about 10 years active in already and has his eye on getting out once his contract is up, but at the same time if he gets the right assignment once this hitch in Japan is up I could see him staying in for 20.

I'm just doing this to do it. I think it would be cool to give him something that no one else has thought of for him. And hell if he does get promoted I can get another set of grips made for him, no biggie. The big trick is finding the right Colt 1911 for the job. He loves Colts. I thought about getting him a RIA tactical like mine, but he deserves a better 1911 than that from me.

I'm relating from my experience, as I've got stuff with my old ranks on them, that I "grew" out of.
..so I'd still go with either his his branch insignia (MP crossed pistols), or an Army Officer cap device, rather than a temporary thing like rank.

Those crossed MP pistols is a pretty damn cool idea. Thanks
