Friend has a Colt Gold Cup that has started jamming all the time. We can't get three to four rounds through it
with out a jam. When it jams, it stovepipes with a live round. Live round sticking straight up between slide and barrel.
Gun is several years old and always ran perfectly up until recently.
Tried all sorts of different ammo, factory, hand loads, FMJ, hollow point, etc, etc.
Tried different Colt mags, several different Wilson Combat mags, and others
I'm thinking a problem with the extractor or ejector maybe?
Any thoughts?
Sounds like a wore out recoil spring. That will cause the stove piping you described.
When was the last time it was stripped and the extractor pulled and cleaned along with the channel? Does the owner know the round count? Does it have a buffer in it? Has the top of the chamber been inspected well to make sure lead has not built up if he's shot a lot of lead lately?

Sounds like it may just be a maintenance issue. If the gun ran perfectly fine before and now it is not, and nothing has changed, then new springs (Factory weight) along with inspecting/cleaning the extractor are probably all that is needed. While cleaning and function checking, check the tension of the extractor. It could be that the extractor has now lost its tension through years of heavy use might need to be either re-tensioned or replaced.
My lightweight commander was doing the same thing on the last round of the mag even with a 20# variable recoil spring.
Took it out this weekend and only lubed it minimally with CLP and it didnt happen again.
Before I was lubing the frame rails generously with TW25b
