 Magwell On Officer?

Was at the L.G.S. the other day, and was FFing a Dan Wesson CCO, their aluminum officer framed 1911 with a commander length barrel. felt really nice in the hands, but the grip felt a tad shorter than I would like. I like the way a full size grip feels, but I know the officer grip would be better for CCW.

The gentleman behind the counter thought that maybe you would be able to add a magwell to the officer frame. The frame would still be shorter than a full frame, but would feel better since it would be somewhere between the two. That, and it would add a magwell to the gun to aid in reloads.

So would this be possible to do? The only thing that would be odd is that the rear of the frame is rounded a little, so it would not match up exactly with the magwell.

They do make them for a reason.

Yes, it is certainly possible. There is a Wilson CQB compact on the EE right now that has a magwell.

For me going to the Wilson 7 round mag with the plastic bumper that is a little longer gives me a place for my pjnky.
I also have the steel bumpers, slightly shorter but still longer than the G.I. style pictured.
As far as the backstrap/mainspring housing I don't miss the length.

It's not the length on the front that I miss, its the length on the back. I have small fingers, so my fingers fit fine on the front. Its the material on the rear where the heal of my hand should go that I miss. That's where a mag-well would come into play.

If you are looking to get the grip a little bigger and are looking at DW CCO, why not check out the Dan Wesson Guardian in .45? Full size Commander with a Bobtail.

Ask sumo61 what he thinks of your idea.

He's trading that exact gun for bobtail Commander. I don't think he put 50 rounds thru DW CCO.

Nice gun.

That's the one I have on mine.

I wouldnt hesitate to slap one on there.
I have one on a 5" that gets CCW'd on a regular basis in an OWB holster.
I get more printing from the beavertail and hammer than I do with the scant fractions of an inch added by the magwell and bumpers.
Plus, if your looking for a bit more area to get your pinkey on its a no brainer.

I went with the Wilson EZ loader magwell.

ETA: Pic. I suppose you could call it a low profile as its not very noticable.

Yep, works great too. I have a magwell sitting in my parts box waiting on me to figure out which CCO to get. An officers size frame with a magwell feels perfect to me.

So now here's the question, who makes a CCO that is easy to find? I missed an opportunity on the Dan Wesson CCO just recently.

I would like to have it be an all steel if possible, unlike D.W.'s CCO (theirs has an aluminum frame).

I thought all the CCOs were lightweight? It would make sense.

S&W and Sig both make them, Colt made the original but I'm not sure if them make one now. Kimber makes a Compact that's close (slightly shorter barrel) and Springfield made a very similar one too. There are a number of custom option as well. I could certainly have forgotten a few other too.

I did it on my Kimber Custom Compact with a SA magwell, gets it to a full length grip or close and a curved backstrap.
