I got my first P38 on a trade this week! Can someone help me identify what some of the marks on it mean? After the serial number it has "e ac 44". I assume that the 44 is the production year but what does the "e ac" mean? Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Also on the right side it says "R GUNS CARPENTERSVILLE IL." From what I have read online about it, that is who imported it.

Without a bigger picture I would say that your gun is in the E block of serial numbers. The German military would start at 0001 thru 9999 then add a letter suffix in order. Your pistol was made by Walther AC was the code assigned to them. The Germans used letter or number codes to confuse the allies as to where the arms were being made. Mauser was byf and Spreewerk was cyq. Yes the 44 denotes that it was made in 1944.

Nice looking piece, sir!

May I ask where you got it? Gun show? Gun shop? Private sale?

Thanks guys and thank you for the help.

I picked it up at the military show this weekend in Franklin. I am a big collector of WWII military items and traded a German WWII helmet for it.

Ah, yes, the TN Military Collector's Assoc. show. I've been there & slobbered all over their Luger displays..................

I've also taken guns there for appraisals as well. Lots of good info to be found from those guys.
