handgun for kayaking?
im thinking about finding a handgun for kayaking. i dont really want to carry my super redhawk. i will be in open water brackash/salt.
im thinking a SS revolver in .357 or .44. maybe a pistol? i dono.
Kayak camping? I'd find it hard to gun and kayak at the same time.
Ruger Sp101.
Smith and Wesson stainless.
Otherwise go compact auto. Glock, or Sig. Glocks tennifer finish is very corrosion resistant. Sigs coated stainless slides are resilient as well.
just kayaking. mostly just in case i come across trouble in the swamp
I carry my normal EDC glock 19 in a tactical talior "luner" on on of their duty belts when I kayak fish
No one has once questioned what I have in it
I carried something reliable but cheap to replace. At the time it was a P11, but it would be my LC9 now if I take up Kayaking again.
Remington 870 Marine magnum is best suited for water use.................

Since you already appear to be a Ruger guy I'd say SP101.
.500 magnum.
What do you anticipate having trouble with. People, gator, snakes, etc?
.357mag or 38 special loaded in the .357 would be a great choice. The Ruger revolvers are excellent pistols and very reliable. That said Ruger or S&W which ever you can get best price on but for sure stainless steel.
Something with a lanyard ring in case you and it fall into the water.
Go all naval gunfire in em!
Mini Draco and drum in a pinntle mount.

I would look into a Sig P226 Navy
It has phosphated interanal parts .Aluminum rec and a SS slide
Or a M&P or GLOCK But I dont know if there internal parts are protected? or if the use regular Steel in there slides.
A Lanyard would be a must
But on the other had Ive used handguns in my boat without lanyards when shooting large sharks in the head before putting them in my boat.
But my boat is bigger than my 2 kayaks
Glock covers all the bases97% TUPPERWARE 3% STEEL!
Stainless and a tied off water tight container big enough to float.
Caliber depends on perceived threats.
G29?
Glock G23 with double tap ammo.
Buy a lanyard whatever you do.

My choice is a Stainless Blackhawk, caliber of your choice, though I like .45 colt.
Unless you are kayaking in the Gulf of Aden, I would carry a stainless Ruger Bearcat. 3 rounds of hollow points & 3 rounds of snake shot should be all you need.
Accountant
H&K Mk23 and Sig -226 Navy/Mk25 are the only two I know that are really protected internally (springs etc).
In the manual for my Mk23 it cautions you that the serial number can rust (I guess they engrave that after they coat the gun). So if you keep the serial number oiled you'd be safe

.
If you were in fresh water it wouldn't matter so much.
Outside of the two above, I'd say any good gun with no regualr steel (alloy frame with stainless slide, poly frame with stainless etc) would be good as long as you oil all the internal parts real well.
With the revolvers, I'd be conerned that most of the mechanical bits are covered up inside the frame, so unless you take the side plates off routinely and oil I'd be worried especially if you ever actually dunked it under water. Seems to me that most automatics have more acess to getting oil on the trigger, springs, firing pins etc.
Smith & Wesson Model 60. There are no other serious contenders.
I would not recommend a revolver unless you have already looked at what's involved in doing a complete teardown. Something with a stainless slide or tennifer, polymer frame that the internals can be easily opened after a submersion. Glock fits.
Are GLOCKS internal parts protected like the Sig 226 Navy and other sig models

The internals parts? are they protected ? and with what?
Im fine with a revolver as long as its parts are protected and the operator knows who to rebuild the revolver.

I would think he would be better off packing the handgun in a quality thumb strap holster with lanyard.

Why DD ammo
Why not Winchester Ranger B
Most of the calibers call for Shellac apllied to the primer and Black Lucas at the case mouth 9mm,40,357sig,45acp,45gap
Some call for just Shellac at the primer & mouth Like the 38spl +P 130 Bonded
I used to carry a 2.5" S&W 686 while working in the swamp and it took a dunking on several occasions; I sprayed it out thoroughly with WD40 then blew it out with compressed air. It still looks good to this day. I carried it on my boat for a while too before switching to a Glock 27 (long since sold as was the boat). If you put Hogue grips on the gun they actually make a lanyard stud to replace the screw in the bottom; add a drop of Loctite to keep it tight. These days when I go kayak camping, and it's been quite a while, I throw a Glock 19 in either the deck back or usually just put it in one of my dry backs in the storage area (my kayaks are not sit on tops) then get it out when I set up camp for the night. I think my lanyard is one of the Blackhawk models but I can't recall off the top of my head.
G26
I have been swimming with Colt .45s, S&W revolvers and Glocks. The Colt rusted before I got back to base the S&W stainless worked great and now carry a 3in Model 60 in .357 a lot when in the boats or on the water. I like a Glock 19 or 23 as the one I go to if I know I will be swimming with it, as it even works under water and has never corroded even in salt. Some of my friends even dive with them in place of bang sticks.
You guys just beg to lose your guns on the water.

Short barrel single shot shotgun. Attach to your vessel with heavy twine or paracord.
You won't cry as much when the salt/brackish water works on it. Hose down with fresh water when you hit the beach.
Check out the firearms on Swamp People or whatever the program that has " Choot them, Elizabeth!" ..RUST CITY.
Formerly hunted waterfowl in your proposed environments.
Best.
I wouldn't attach the lanyard to myself while kayaking. We had a guy here on the Mississippi drown when his life jacket strap got caught on an underwater snag. A lanyard is just one more thing to get caught on something.
You could attach it to the boat while paddling and then clip it to your waist while ashore.
A GP100 with a Bowen Classic Arms lanyard ring and one of the coil type lanyards would be my choice.
I have the kayak, the GP100, now I just need the lanyard and ring.
I used to kayak camp and tour Gulf coast FL. I carried my stainless S&W M60 .38. But it's not as though I carried on my hip. It was usually in a little pack I carried with other emergency items.

In a salt water environment,Glock. The ease of access to all internal parts, the Tennifer treatment on the slide and polymer frame make Glock a good choice for me. I've been dunked in the drink a few times with my G23 and a quick rinse with fresh water when field stripped and I was good to go (dont forget the mag springs). When I get home, I detail strip and cleaned all parts with Windex first, then rubbing alcohol, dry with canned air, then lube. (stay away from WD 40 on any firearm)
My opinion, revolvers dont hold up well to frequent detail stripping. And its a pain in the ass.

excellent advice.
and I'm a fan of the SP101 as well for this.
Not a glock guy, but a glock. And a used one. $350, and you don't care if it gets beat up or not. Good defensive ammunition is usually well sealed (I know gold dots are), but a little bit of clear nail polish wouldn't hurt around the case mouth and primer.

This. Carry a dry bag and a backpack so you can swim if you need to. If you need to ditch the boat or retrieve it or something.

+1 on the above and I would take a G17/G22 with night sights. You will not have to worry about it getting wet.
