Kel-Tec PF-9 woes continue... *** UPDATE, GOT MY $$ BACK***
A while back I posted about my Kel-Tec PF-9 blowing cases, both with Winchester and Federal ammo. I posted some pics for all to see. Sent the pistol back to Kel-Tec along with the ruptured caes. Kel-Tec replaced the slide, barrel, mag catch, among other things.
Got the pistol back, hit the range to qualify with it as a BUG, and on the 3rd shot, same thing... this time, much more violent. I called Kel-Tec on the spot and demanded a TOTAL refund which they said no problem... I was really pissed off at this point.
I cooled down some and thought no way could TWO barrels be bad so I fired a full box of Blaser brass-cased ammo and a full box of Blaser aluminum-cased ammo all w/o ruptures but the magazine kept popping out. I fired the rest of the Federal ammo, of which one case previously ruptured with the FIRST barrel, but none ruptured on this new barrel. Because I had such ruptures with the Winchester, I figured perhaps not only is the Winchester ammo bad, but the first barrel must have been bad to make the Federal case blow.
So now I have a pistol that is shooting all ammo well, no blown cases (no more of the original suspect Winchester to try) but the damn magazines keep popping out, both of them act the same manner with various ammo used. Went and bought two more new boxes of ammo, one Federal and one Winchester, and fired them all w/o ANY problems other than the mag popping out every third or so round.
Contacted Kel-Tec to tell them the "good news" and the "bad news". Kel-Tec sends me a NEW GRIP ASSEMBLY with MAGAZINE CATCH and last night I did the swap. Went outside to shoot and now the magazines pop out on just about every shot... the new grip assy made it worse... WHAT THE FUCK!!!
The only constant now is the ORIGINAL magazines, both of which were subject to violent case ruptures initially. I tried to tweak the area where the magazine catch holds the mag but no luck. I made SURE I was not near the mag release and even shot it left-handed.
I guess I will contact Kel-Tec Monday and see about a mag for mag swap as a LAST DITCH EFFORT to make this pistol work. I have tried really hard to like this gun, it's small, really accurate, easy to carry, and provides 8 rounds of 9mm power. I have a few friends who have PF-9's and their pistols run 100%... I sure as hell wish mine was. It feeds great, ejects great, hits where I aim, just won't hold the mags in. Can't see any issue with the mags but I'm thinking now it must be the mags.
Thoughts?.... other than the Kel-Tec bashing, post away. BTW- no, this is no longer my BUG...
borrow a mag for a friend and test it.
Also ask Kel-Tec to hook you up with some free mags for your troubles.

With all this crap happening to
MY pistol, and no other pistol, they more than likely think I'm a nutt-case. They offered a refund already, but I held off after being able to shoot w/o case ruptures. Now if I can just get themag issue resolved.
Perhaps I'll just get a friends mag and try it tomorrow... can't hurt.
I have friends that own the PF 9. All, except one, have flawless guns. I own a P-11. I spent a lot of time inspecting, polishing, and filing parts to make it a fine running weapon. Have you studied the mag catch system to determine the flaw? Very simple weapon. Maybe it is something that you can improve on to make it a flawless weapon.

The mag catch is a simple design. A bent wire acts as a spring. I see no visible defect in the contact surface on the top of the catch that would contribute to the mag popping out. Visually, it looks as if there is more than enough mag catch exposed (when looking down into the grip area) to hold the mag in place. I used a screw driver to slightly bend the opening of the mag catch (on the mag body) outwards in an effort to give the catch more of a lip to hold onto. Not enough tweak to see unless you look really hard, but enough to at least help, so I thought.
After this, instead of popping out every round, it only did it on every forth or fifth round. That's why I think my mags are fubar from the earlier case ruptures.
I just don't get it.... If/when I get this issue resolved, I sure as hell will not be buying any more Kel-Tec pistols. I guess I just got that "one gun" that just won't act right.
My PF-9 has the magazine popping out issues. I've tried new mags, and it already has the metal mag catch. Nothing worked. I won't ever buy or use a Kel-Tec again. I knew the whole pocket 9mm thing was too good to be true. An LCP or 442 rides in my pocket now.

Does it pop out just barely, just enough so a fresh round does not chamber?

Yes, It doesn't eject the mag all the way, just maybe a quarter of an inch so where the new round gets pushed forward a bit, but not all the way into the chamber.
Contacted Kel-Tec... throwing in the towel on this pistol. Sending it back for a refund. I wonder if they will pay me back what I paid or some watered-down "dealer's cost"...
I can w/o hesitation say that all the people I spoke with at Kel-Tec were extremely friendly... guess they are getting plenty of practice.
If anyone needs PF-9 size holsters, see my ad in the EE...
Every-time, I feel like squeezing the trigger and going to purchase one of these pistols, I find a post like this, dang.
I will pass for now. Sorry about your experience with the PF9.
I am having this same issue with my PF9. I've emailed Kel-Tec. We will see what happens. I won't carry it in the mean time. It seems the recoil alone is causing the magazine to eject.
Was considering a PF-9 or -11. Trying to avoid a .380. Need something small.

If you have the metal mag catch you may be hitting it with your thumb during recoil/shooting and don't realize it.
I had an issue with my G19 where I thought I had kept my thumb down while shooting, but I kept hitting the slide catch holding it down during recoil.
try and find some way to block the mag catch so you can't press it and see if that's the issue.
but If you have the plastic catch then it may be worn.
I emailed Kel-Tec:
I recently purchased a PF-9. I broke the pistol in with about 200 rounds. Last weekend I shot the PF-9 again, as did another shooter. The magazine is ejecting with almost every shot. I am an experienced shooter and I made sure my thumb was not hitting the mag catch during firing. It appear that recoil alone is causing the mag catch to disengage. I have looked on ar15.com and ktog.com and it seems others are having the same issue. Please advise what can be done to fix this issue. I do not feel comfortable trusting my life to the gun as long as this issue continues.
I also own a P3AT and have never had a problem with it; I carry it everyday.
Thank you,
XXXX
Here is their response:
Hi XXXX,
I do want to apologize for the problem you are experiencing. We are aware of a problem with the magazine catches and are working to correct it. In the meantime, we ask those that are experiencing a problem to send their pistols in to be adjusted properly.
Again, I want to apologize for any inconvenience this causes you.
We need to hand adjust the spring and possibly swap out the magazine catch.
Just ship your pistol to:
Kel-Tec CNC Inc.
ATTN: Service Dept.
1475 Cox Road
Cocoa, FL 32926
If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
Thanks!

I have a PF9 that drops the magazine about every three rounds when I shoot it too. My girlfriend shoots it 100 fucking percent of the time, hundreds of rounds, without ANY problems . I can shoot it in a vice without any mag losses. You and I have to be hitting the mag release. I actually stretched the mag release spring to make it heavier and replaced the mag catch with the metal one available from K T, it helped a little. I also shoot it one handed with a lot better luck, but drop the mag a LOT more with a two handed grip. I find if I point my thumbs out away from the gun two handed I do better as well. For what I bought this thing for, I have no problem zccepting that I should just shoot it one handed. Irrelivent, I gave it to my girlfriend since it likes her better

I know for a fact I am NOT hitting the mag release. I watched while I shot AND even fired it LEFT handed... same crap. I am waiting on my direct refund now. No way in hell would I keep that pistol with all the crap it has given me. I just want my $$ back... simply put, the pistol is a cheap half-ass working gun.
