 new XD 9 tactical problems

I have a new XD 9 tactical and got to finally shoot some rounds thru it today and must say i am dissapointed with this gun. I only had some PMC brass blazer ammo 115gr, and it was practically a single shot pistol. Almost every shot ended up with a FTE, or stovepip. I dont know if i need more rounds thru the gun before it functions properly, I only shot about 50 thru it today, got tired of cycling the slide manually after every shot. I dont know if maybe it needs a stronger recoil spring or maybe a coil or two trimed off? Yeah, I am not all that impressed with Springfield Armory XD's any help and I would be thankfull

That certainly sounds like a lemon. Most XDs are good to go out of the box. Check with Springfield customer service. They are awesome and will make things right for you.

Just put about 300 rds thru my brand new XDm9 Compact with no problems at all. I thought i might have to break it in, but it's GTG.

If it is not extracting or only half extracting not popping the empty case out. You could have a broken ejector. If you lock open the slide look in and see if your see a metal finger to the left (opposite side of the ejection port) of the breech face.

Have you tried different ammo?

The ejector looks fine, just checked it. I am going to try some differant ammo and see if that makes a difference? If that does not work should I try a stronger recoil spring or maybe a lighter one and see what that does? I really hate to send it back to Sringfield Armory but if thats what I have to do then well I guess thats what I will do. I am glad most all I have read about their customer service has been excellent. Thanks Guys

Something isn't right, I haven't found a brand of ammo that either of my Xdm 9's won't eat. Definitely try some different ammo and if that doesn't work give Springfield a ring, they will certainly make it right.

Usually it's a magazine problem in my experience. I have fed everything in the world through the xd's I've had. Cheap ammo, hollow points, hot ammo, etc. Never, not one, any malfunctions. I have had them with my 1911's and 1 or 2 times with the few glocks I've had. In my opinion their the best all around plastic pistol out there and I can shoot just as good with mine as I can a 1911. I hate the way Glocks shoot compared to a XDM but I'm sure other people say the same thing about Glocks. I just don't like covering up my target at 25 yards with my front sight like you do with a glock.

thanks for all the help guys. I am going to try some differant recoil springs(#15, #17 factory, #19). I am also going to try some differant ammo.I will try a couple of differant mags as well, I did not think about the mag causing the problem. If this doesnt work then off to Springfeild Armory it will go.

So almost every round was a problem, the ones that did eject...where did they go?
I would bet off of your wrists or bouncing off of your head. If so, are you a revolver guy?

i vote for trying more different ammo. i reload so i can't recommend an ammo brand. maybe fiocchi((hotter than wwb loads).

no not a revolver guy, I pretty much carried a glock 19 for 15 years. Most of the rounds stovepiped, or hung between the barrel and the edge of the slide(not really a good desription) but close. Sometimes the slide would not go far enough back to even eject the casing, and sometimes you would get the FTE while trying to load a new round from the mag. I have some differant powered recoil springs and some other ammo. I just need to get a chance to go to the range and try some differant things to see what it is? I really think its the ammo, PMC brass 115gr 9mm, i might have just got an underloaded box of ammo? I will get it shooting, just need some play time with it is all.

Yup, I've got two XD-9SC's and they have both shot 100% with about 5k+ rds between them. Something is wrong with yours and Springfield wlll make it right, you should not need to mess with the springs.

Has anyone else tried to shoot it? Could be limp wristing, let someone else try to shoot it, see if it does the same thing.
Cheap and simple, then start changing springs.

OP is a glock shooter; could this be the answer? j/k

i think it's the ammo. maybe mags. hopefully OP will try different ammo first.

It does sound like what light loads would do. If so a lighter recoil spring can let you at least shoot them up.

i shoot blazer brass 115gr all the time from my xd 9 service model and have never had a casing stovepipe or any other issues at all. i would say something is up with that pistol send it back to springfield

Hey Takigu, is your xd hard to pull the slide back? Does it go back smooth with not much effort? My xd takes a bit of umpf to pull the slide back all the way. I am wondering if maybe I just got a stronger recoil spring from the factory by some chance. I am still waiting to get a chance to go to the range. Thanks Guys for all the suggestions and I do plan on changing springs one at a time and trying some differant ammo, also one brand at a time . I will let you guys know how it goes when I get to try it out :~) hopefully soon

I purchased two XD9s in November 2011. One 4" Service model for myself and the 3" SC for my lovely wife for her CCW. Fitted them both with Crimson Trace laser grips.

I had the chance to put about 300 rounds through my 4" with no issues whatsoever (Would have shot the wife's, but she insisted that she wanted to be the first...). I was not real impressed with my ability to chew out the center of my targets with its open sites, but place the blame upon my skill with the weapon and not the gun. When I took my time and used the laser site over a bench bag, I could put 5 round groups in a quarter all day.

My slide pull is just about what I would expect. Not light, but not difficult. The slide pull on my wife's SC is actually harder than my 4", but that may be normal.

Springfield will take care of you and these guns are just too well made to accept anything other than flawless operation. I would send it in and have them take a look. The emotional duress of being without my gun for six weeks or so is less than having a gun that should work and doesn't.

Good luck to you.
