Just picked up an old Springfield Mil-Spec 1911A1

I just picked it up at the gun show and I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about. It has a "NM" prefix and a 4 digit serial number. Slide appears to have been refinished, but its hard to tell, the lettering doesn't look very deep. It looks like someone tried to make it a clone, the grips don't match left and right. Here's a few pics!

strange to see the angled grasping grooves but the smaller sights and no relieved ejection port...SA used to market a G.I. Mil-Spec...enjoy your new pistol...

That's my thread too, just putting it in both places. Yeah, the more and more I look at it, it does have some interesting features, not one I've seen before. I might even contact Springfield just for the hell of it.

That's not a "Mil-Spec" model, it is just an early Springfield 1911 from before they had confusing names. It's actually closer to a USGI 1911 than the current GI model. It's worth $350-400.

it could be what the used to call the G.I. Mil-Spec...which is more like the G.I. Model today...nice either way...

I call Springfield and gave them the serial number, they said it was made in 1985. They said it looked like a kit gun. I wonder if it has any GI parts on it? Thanks for the help guys!!

I owned one identical to that a few years ago. I even carried it on duty (until my Chief saw it). I wish I still had it. Other posters are correct in that it IS NOT a Mil-Spec. The ejection port isn't lowered or flared, and the magazine well isn't bebeled. I also doubt you will find ANY 'Made in Brazil' markings on it. IIRC, it should have IMBEL stamped on the receiver beneath the right grip panel. Enjoy it. If you EVER consider selling it, PLEASE let me know! ;)

I think that slide is from a newer model. Mine is a 1989 model and the
crest is to the rear of the ejection port. The newer guns have the crest
farther forward on the slide. Here is mine.

SA made this particular model from the mid-80s to around 1990, in blued and parkerized finishes. The one I had was made in 1989 and was identical to the OP's gun. The forward-slanted cocking serrations, small GI sights and GI-style ejection port (as well as the non-beveled mag well) are NORMAL for this version. I'm betting that the GI-style thumb safety and lanyard looped MSH were added by a previous owner, though, as these are not normally found on SA=produced 1911s, except for the current USGI versions, which all have the ILS system.

The NM prefix should mean it was finished in the USA...

Thanks everyone for the input guys! I was carrying it around the gun show a while back looking for some grips, a guy made an offer I couldn't refuse.
