Hello i am the proud owner of a 1873 Winchester rifle that is chambered in 38-40
my grandad really wants to find a real Single Action Army gun to match this set but we cannot afford a 5000$ real 1st gen single action army.
This is where you come in ... does anyone know where i can get a replica single action army chambered in 38-40? i only find one on gunbroker that is new.
uberti is a brand i know of but are there any others? colt, uberti ,.....
please help me this would make my grandads 92 birthday really fun for him to come out and see me shoot this revolver knowing he had a full functional set of the old cowboy guns.
Summation: find a replica SSA 38-40 revolver
Uberti has the Cattleman in .44-40 for $489.00.
Since you have a real Winchester, I'd suggest a real Colt.
The Colt Custom Shop will make you a new Colt Single Action Army in your choice of barrel length, caliber, finish, grips, and most any other options you want.
Price will be less than $5,000, depending on just what your want.. If you want ivory grips and engraving, the price will be much higher than a standard SAA with the blued and color case hardened finish.
Your first step is to contact Colt customer service and talk to them about what you want and pricing.
Once you and Colt decide on the exact options, you go to a local gun dealer, and he places the order with a Colt Factory Authorized Distributor. They actually place the order with Colt.
If that's too expensive, Cimarron Arms imports top quality Uberti SAA's in all barrel lengths and in 38 WCF.
These are nice guns, but the color case hardening is not nearly up to Colt standards for nice colors.

An "in between" is USFA who make excellent replicas in the $1,100 dollar range.

Those r all good sites but from yalls post I wonder if it's worth it too just buy the real thing ... When it becomes 2000$ for a replica new or 2000$ for a real kinda beat up SAA then i want the real one for the reason it's a real set from the late 1800's
I just got my new CDNN catalog, and they have some Doug Turnbull USFA guns in 38-40. That would be mighty tempting.

Id rather have a worn looking original over a new replica any day, as long as the org. Colt is a shooter, that is the route id go.

The cimmaron only costs about $600 in 38wcf. I also think it would be pretty tricky to find a 1st gen 38wcf for $2000 even though 38wcf is one of the least desirable calibers. Good luck
A 3rd Generation Colt should only run about $1300 +/- a little, new. The USFA SAAs are even better than todays current production Colts if you want a shooter, though the Colts aren't too shabby.
You can buy a new Colt chambered in .38-40 WCF.
