Recommend a S&W mid size carry gun

I've been on a revolver kick of late. I have plenty of tac guns like Glocks and HK's and such. Now I'm looking for something with some style and class.

I already have a 629, a 640, and a 351 (22 mag). I'd like:

Stainless

Adjustable sights

3 to 4 inch bbl, preferably full lug as I think they look better

Maybe nice wood grips, though I can always swap those out.

Caliber - I already probably own too many different calibers of guns, so I don't want anything new for me. So something in .357, 9mm, 44 Special or Mag, or 45.

Uses will be range work, and belt carry.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Hard to beat a 66. Love mine. Unfortunatly prices seem to be going up on all the K frames.
Take a look at http://smith-wessonforom.com

W748 is spot on with his suggestion for a K-Frame. I have 2.5" model 66 with pachmayer CCW grips that carries concealed quite well. For belt carry a 4" would be great. I'm in the market for one myself.

ETA I wouldn't neglet the Rugers either. My 4" GP100 carries nicely on a belt and is great on the range. It might be easier to find a 3" GP100 than a 3" K-frame. I'm not a K frame expert but I believe the 3" variants carry a premium.

S&W 66 3"
I really like the round but with Speigel grips
The 3" barrel allows for a longer ejector rod, this can be an issue with 357 cases.

686 four inch or 3 inch
629 classic or classic dx in 5 inch
29 classic or classic dx in 5 inch
629 three inch full lug/unfluted
60 with 3 inch full lugged barrel/adj. sights .357
586 four inch
696 full lug three inch .44 special

Some of these listed bring a premium

You should really consider:

624 .44 special
629 four inch
29 four inch
629 mountain gun four inch

I think I'll keep any eye out for this one:

60 with 3 inch full lugged barrel/adj. sights .357

I'm looking at some on GB now, and that is what I've been wanting.

I already have a 629 in 5", which is a really nice gun. I have a Charter Arms bulldog too, so I'm set for both small/big guns in 44.

But for 357 I only have a 640. So this 60 would be a full size one for the set.

What frame size is the 60? K or L?

And for S&W frames, the small ones are J frames. The big boys like the 629 are N. And K/L are in between. Is there a big difference between the K/L frames?

I see the model 60 is a 5 shot. What frame size is it? K? Are all k frames's 5 shot?

Thanks,

Model 60 is a J frame. All J frames in .38/.357 are 5 shots. .327 Federal are 6 shots.
K frames are medium frame and are 6 shots in .38/.357. ie.. Model 10 = blue .38 Model 13 = blue(or nickle) .357.

It is really hard to beat a 66/19 2.5" for a CC belt gun. I've got seven of the darn things and love 'em! I'm also a fan of the 3+" K frames. I've got a 3.25" 66 that is just awesome. To go with a 3" 60 really doesn't get you much. It'll be a little thinner due to being a 5-shot, but I'd rather have the extra round and a bigger frame (fits my hand better). A 2.5" L-frame (586/686) if you can find one is also a heck of a nice piece. I prefer the K-frame, but that's just me.

I'm also a fan of N-frame 44-specials. Shoot real nice and due to the lightweight barrels carry pretty decent.

ETA - here's some pics of part of the collection:

19-4 upper left, 19-5 lower left, 64-2 upper right, 66-2 lower right, 37 in middle. All are K-frame except the middle that is a J.

My trusty 19-3

If you weren't too hooked on adjustable sights, I would try to find a Model 65 w 3-inch barrel. Big enough to shoot easily, small enough to conceal without too much trouble.

Smith's adjustable sights are kind of a pain for daily carry. It's really hard to beat a three K frame fixed sight revolver (10, 13, 64 or 65, take your pick). Which is why they can be so hard to find. A used one will usually get sold very quickly.

Curse you...that 624 is calling my name...actually a 24 would be just as good...I have the 696 but a 44dpec. N frame would be sweet.

That is nice. There are some on GB for 300-400 bucks.

Is the 65 a 5 or 6 shot? And what frame size is it? S&W doesn't list it on their web site anymore so I can't look it up.

Thanks,

The 65 is a six shot, stainless K frame in 357.

Ive had several fixed sighted S&W .
Every single one of them shot POA / POI using 158gr SWC
The 148 are close also.

For a carry gun the last thing I would want are the adjustable sights

Some of you guys need to get up to speed on current prices . The 3" model 66 that was only made for a short time is now the most sought after Smith made since 1980 . They go for a grand plus used !

Personally. I love shooting the 686. It's not mine, but it's in the family (mothers fathers favorite) I'll get it one day and be proud to give it home.

As much as I like the 66 you will be better off with a Smith model 13 or 65 3" round but.

Don't really need the adjustable sights on a carry gun.
