I just bought a S&W mod 60 and was wanting some info on it. It has a serial # of
ABR004XX ABR04XX and it doesn't have a dash. The only thing that bugs me is the serial on the butt is different than the serial inside the cylinder. Can anyone date it or tell me anything else about it? I'm happy with it without knowing this stuff but was just wondering. Thanks in advance. Sorry for the crappy pic.
Edit to updated serial number
The three letter prefix guns can be hard to pin down on actual ship dates (with a S&W the 'date' is not necessarily the date it was made but rather the date it was shipped from the factory) because they have been used out of sequence and across various model lines. It appears your M60 was shipped after 1982 when they deleted the pinned barrel and probably between Jan. and Oct. in 1983, as the sequence started in Jan. of '83 with serial number ABL 4000 and started in October of that year with ADE 6700.
The number on the frame seen when you openh the cylinder is an internal control number so the factory knew which parts went with which gun, etc. and not relevant to anything else. The actual serial number is the one on the bottom of the grip frame (butt).
Very nice little S&W...enjoy it.
Yep, On a model 60 of that vintage the only place the serial number is stamped is on the butt. Nice gun, my model 60 is one of my favorites.
Thanks for the replies. I paid $550 for it was that a fair price? The pic doesn't do it justice, it was LNIB.
Those are real nice little guns. I have one that came in the old style two piece box, which I still have paper work, wrapping and all. I think I bought that around 83 or so.

I see some very used model 60's for the mid $400s So that probably is not too out of line. I would pay $550 for a truly LNIB older model 60 over a newly made Smith for that price.
