Yee-oww my Old Model SBH got me

I inherited the Old Model Super Blackhawk .44mag my dad bought back in 1970 or 1971. It has a 7.5" barrel, unfluted cylinders and a damn square trigger guard.
I took it to the range yesterday to sight it in. Every single handgun my dad had hit to a very different poi than I do no matter whether it is iron sighted or with a red dot. Since I want to take it with me to hunt pigs soon I needed to check it.
I have some BH 300gr ammo I bought from a local guy a while ago and yesterday was actually the first time I have shot it.
I understand completely why Ruger went to a rounded trigger guard. My first few rounds had my knuckle hurting. I held it in a 2 handed grip to check accuracy and had to wrap my hand a little more around the grip than I do when shooting my 1911s. It put more of my finger on the trigger too but didn't seem to hurt accuracy.
I think dad had it sighted in using 240gr bullets since I was hitting very high with the 300gr bullets.
I was also single loading to force myself to become familiar with it and be sure I wasn't anticipating recoil.
After I had the sights adjusted I was very surprised. My 53 year old eye usually don't like iron sights on a handgun but the sights on this revolver are amazingly good. I managed to put 3 rounds almost touching in the center of a 1.5" bullseye at 50 yards. I quit after that because I figured any more would ruin a perfectly good group.

Any other tips for shooting these? I do plan on handloading for it. I have everything I need to load for it.

Good to hear its getting some range time.

I sometimes quit shooting groups after one shot in the black

A set of Pachmyer grips will cover the squared off back of the trigger guard and protect that little piggy, making it far more comfortable to shoot. It will also soak up some of the recoil. I'm not sure why 300gr bullets would be necessary to shoot pigs as I have taken many fairly large hogs (over 400 lbs) shooting regular 240gr JHP or JSP bullets in my SBH.

If the boars you want to shoot happen to be bears, 300gr bullets may be more appropriate for that task, IMO. YMMV.

I wasn't specifically lookingfor 300gr. It's just what this guy had when I was looking for ammo. I will probably go with 240gr. They should be easier to find.

Here is a pic of my SBH (along with my RH) that shows the Pachmyer grip installed. You can see the way it covers the back of the trigger guard and makes the grip much easier and way more comfortable. I also found that the original wood stocks would punish my hands badly, causing them to swell after only a few rounds through the pistol. The Pachmyers took care of that problem, too.

BTW, I wasn't bagging on your ammo choice, just commenting that the 240's always did the job for me. If I were after a really big hog, I'd take as much firepower as I could handle, some of those bigguns can be pretty damned mean and I wouldn't want the party to get up close and personal!

That looks exactly like what I need. As for the ammo it wasn't a long thought out choice. I haven't loaded any yet and a local guy had some for sale at a decent price. I figured that I really couldn't have too much bullet. I will say that a 300gr bullet's recoil is- interesting.
