Pfffft, wheelguns. I have a Glock that can hold 16+ rounds
and yet I really want to carry my new 5 shot .357mag SP101 3"
Only 5 shots but I love this little revolver but I am having problems finding a good holster for it. Right now I only have the Fobus one and I don't like it at all.
I knew I was limiting myself when I bought the 3" over the 2 1/4 bbl but that's what I wanted, and plus I may end up getting it ported later on.
Anyway, what are some good holster options? OWB and IWB options wanted. I love my Glock 19 but this revolver is awesome!
Congrats 3 " is a perfect leangth
I don't think a CCW or SD piece should be ported to much of a chance of gas in the face and to bad for the night vision.
I love my little 3" 101, but I hated the sights. I sent mine to C&S shop to have S&W J frame sights installed. Now it is much better. Now I just need to find a grip for my large hand.
Huge mag capacity is really only important if you plan to miss a lot.
Good points on the porting and shooting at night. I have seen a couple done at my local shop and they seem to like it a lot but I could see the disadvantages too.
Highnoon holsters and Don Hume have some great IWB and OWB for the SP101. I have both for mine.
They are a great little gun. I need to get mine to the range more.
I carry a 3" Charter Arms Bulldog in a Bianchi #5BHL thumbsnap, which I think is made for the bobbed 3" SP-101. A quick look at the Bianchi website ought to turn up the version for yours, if it has a full hammer spur. In fact the Bianchi website lists the same catalog numbers for both pistols (RH=10261, LH=10265).
I used to have a 3" SP101 that I carried IWB In a Milt Sparks Versa-Max 2 holster. It's pricy and there's usually a several-months-long waiting list, but it was worth it. It kept the revolver snug to the body and was quite comfortable.
Not just night vision, but hot gasses and particles of unburned powder in the face and eyes can take a little bit of vinegar out of you. If you don't already have the Hogue rubber grips, I strongly recommend them. They are a magical combination of small and hand filling. You should probably have a holster made to fit your exact preferences rather than settle. I had one made for a Witness by Jason at TCB firearms and I'm very happy but there are plenty of custom holster makers out there and some that have reasonable prices and quick turnaround.
My SP101 disappears in a Crossbreed Supertuck. 5 rounds of 158gr 357 Magnums...... Yeah I feel pretty well protected.
Edited to add - Yes, if you're firing 357's out of it, the rubber Hogue grips are awesome. I can shoot hundreds of full power 357's and not complain.
bianchi IWB pro ... i think the 3" fits as well, and its a nice lil holster fits my 2.25" SP great
and ditto on the comments about porting .. i wish i could do mine but the negatives outweigh the positives
and ditto as well on 5 rounds of nice high power .357 being enough!

This is like saying 'Carrying a gun is only important if you plan to get in a lot of gun fights.'

Who needs 16 rds...if my hillbilly math is correct, that's 16 dead guys. Are you going to fight the dirty dozen plus 4. In all seriousness though, I always find myself in the same delima. You can have a 30 round magazine in a semi but one jammed round and you lose seconds...seconds equal life or death when you need it. So I say carry a revolver and work on your accuracy.

I'm kinda in the same boat. My daily carry right now is a G19. I picked up my first wheel gun today (Ruger SP101) and slapped some Badger boot grips on it. Even though it's only 5 rounds, and I hadn't really intended for it to be a carry piece.........I find myself wanting to use it as a "sometimes carry" after I get some rounds through it and make sure everything's good.
One thing that surprised me though, is the size. Mine is the 2.25" model and even with the boot grips, which are a hair shorter than the factory grips.....it's literally almost the exact same size as my G19. I laid the SP101 on top of my 19 and was all like

. Here I was thinking it was going to be a pocket gun.
