just picked up a P85 Mark II on Saturday. Came with one mag, I'm looking at adding a few more. My question is will P89/P95 mags work or did the 85 take its own mags?
I haven't pulled my P85MKII out for a while, but IIRC it takes P85 and P89 mags. Not sure about the P95s. But according to Wiki:
The 9mm and .40 S&W versions use double-column box magazines; the 9mm has a 15 round capacity, and the .40 has a 10 round capacity. The .45 ACP versions use single-column magazines holding 7 rounds. All P series of the same caliber use the same magazine; for example, a P89 and P95, both 9mm pistols, use the same magazine, but that magazine cannot be used in the .45 ACP P90 or the .40 S&W P91. The Ruger Police Carbine also uses P series magazines. The P series pistols have an ambidextrous magazine release located behind the trigger guard, it can be pushed forward from either side to eject the magazine.
So it seems (if Wiki can be trusted) that all the P-series 9mm mags will work in all the P-series pistols.
I thought they were all the same, but the Ruger site shows different mags for the 85

Yeah, the P85 had one type, the P85MKII had the new kind that fit everything, as long as it's a 9mm up o the P95. I do know Ruger's p-series. Even fits the PC9 carbine. Although both the P85 and 85MKII mags ""sometimes"" do interchange with each other, after the 89 they're all the same. Hope that helps somehow.
