Ruger P-85 ?
Found a Mint Ruger P85 for right around $300 shipped. Comes in yellow Ruger box , manual and 3 magazines.
Owners could you give me the good and bad on these ?
My first pistol. Big and dependable. Mediocre trigger - but it never bugged me. Is it a straight p-85 or is it a p-85mkII?
The p-85 had a recall for a safety issue(I think) way back when. It may be worth a call to Ruger.
I would snag it in a heart beat! I used to carry it daily in an IWB holster 20 years ago. I still have it... But my wife keeps it for herself

Its stated in the add as a MKII but I couldnt tell in the pics. Was it always marked on the slide as a MKII ?
It is marked on the slide if it is a MarkII. If I remember (and it has been a long time) the only difference is that the mkII had the recall work built in. But it has been a LOOOONG time since this has happened and my details are fuzzy.
Here is a pick of my slide.

Here is the recall notice -
STURM RUGER:
INFORMATION SHEET -THE RUGER P85 SAFETY MODIFICATION-
We are installing a safety modification that replaces the:safety and firing pin mechanism of the original Ruger P85 9mm pistols ,manufactured between 1987-1990.This modification does not apply to any P85 which has "MKIIR "stamped on either the right or left safety;the "MKIIR "identifies that the safety modification has already been installed. The modification also does not apply to any other model P-Series pistol (including the P85MKII),as this safety system is installed in all other models at the time of production. All Ruger P85 pistols should be fitted with this new safety system because a P85 pistol fitted with the new safety system will not accidentally discharge when the safety/decocker lever is engaged if the firing pin is broken in a particular way .That's very important! It can help prevent accidents caused by the user's failure to take the basic safety precaution of always keeping the pistol pointed in a safe direction, especially when loading, unloading or decocking...
I have a MKII. They are very reliable and will shoot any kind of 9mm ammo out there. The trigger is horrible , I call mine "ole clunky" cuz that is how the trigger feels, Its a big gun with low sites. I replaced mine with Trijicon sites. Recoil is minimum, its a big gun, big grip. Can shoot it single or double action. I like mine and would never get rid of it. 300bux NIB is a good deal, id buy it for that. Watch out for aftermarket mags, some work, some dont.
My dad has one as well, he has NEVER cleaned his and it will jam up on occasion, they dont need to be AR-15 clean but you cant just run them forever without cleaning them. lol. He still hasnt cleaned it and just put it away til eventually I do it. lol.
Take down of the slide is fairly straight forward, but you have to push down on the slide stop (inside the frame) to get things back together, this part is sharp so if you get it and take it apart, be mindful of this fact.
Thanks for all the info guys. Just waiting to hear back from seller about the markings on it. The manual says just P85.
I know they get a bad rap for the way they look. But I kinda like the looks of them actually. As a kid in the 80's, the P85 was on the cover of G&A and I thought it was the coolest gun ever.
They are great guns, they went head to head with the Beretta for Gov. contract, not sure why they didnt get it,who knows. That is why they have ambi safety and mag release and lanyard on the bottom. I replaced my grips with some rubber inserts and it shoots very nice. Its a good first gun to teach people on cuz its so big and heavy.
And if you dont get it ask the guy if he is willing to ship to an FFL in GA!!!

P85 was my first 9 back in the early 90s. trigger pull is very long on DA, and there's a ton of travel on SA. reasonably accurate, never had any jamming at all. I put a pachmyer grip wrap on it and really like it.
Mine was stolen 2 years ago––wish i had it back, but probably wouldn't buy another.
i don't remember paying much more than that back in the early 90s. i think it was 329.
Trigger took a almost full return on mine to reset but felt fine firing it. Had a lot of wear on the aluminum frame wear the barrel bottom rode on it cycling. worried me some but never hurt the function. The factory no longer supports them with repair parts far as I can tell so repair may be a little iffy.
