First Kimber (Newbie Question)
I posted this over in the 1911 General Discussion forum but I wanted to see what the guys here have to say. I got my first "real" 1911 today. A Kimber Tactical Custom II. I put 100 rounds through it this morning, I love it! My question is: When I bought the pistol I didn't realize any noticeable wear underneath the safety lever but it seems to have some wear there. Is this normal?

That's sucks.

thanks... but uh, that wasn't my question. I know it sucks. but is it a normal wear spot on a new kimber?
Pretty common. I have an STI that has the same thing.

Agreed. My Warrior has quite a bit of wear showing on her. I'll post some pics later if desired.

Yes!! Please post pics to give me some peace of mind!

Here you are sir:
As you can see the kydex has worn the finish on the upper edges of the slide and the safety lever has worn the receiver and sear/disconnector pin. There's also some wear on the lower side of the grip safety and safety lever. The opposite side is almost identical but no wear on the receiver from the ambi safety lever.

Okay I see. I wonder why kimber doesn't put a more durable finish on their guns...? I think I've decided to just ignore the small blemish and use the hell out of the pistol until it needs a full refinish job. I think after a while once the whole pistol has some wear and tear it won't look so obvious and it will add to the character.
Nice warrior though! That thing definitely has some character!
I've thought about sending her off to get refinished . . . Wilson's Armor Tuff or similar but I kind of like the wear. She doesn't look like a safe queen.

My Pro Carry has wear in the same spot. As far as finish goes, I carry mine daily in an MTAC and after about a year this pistol has a lot of character

Truthfully numbers finish isn't any worse than most other guns. Keep in mind anywhere there are moving parts eventually there will be wear. I have a crimson pro carry that has the same mark under the safety. Its just not as obvious since my frame is a light satin color.

True. I guess what my concern is that I've only had the pistol for a few hours when this mark showed up. And it wasn't handled at the gun shop since it was in the back - in fact, the pistol left Kimber's facility on the Sep. 7... The mark doesn't really look like natural wear - it looks more like a flake. I'm not to concerned about it since this pistol is definitely gonna be a 'user' for me. But it's incredibly irritating to spend $1,000+ on a pistol and it not have an amazing finish.

i wont disagree with you in that department. though unless you have an all stainless gun it seems to be a problem with guns more expensive than kimber. sti for example which can cost several hundred more than a kimber is guilty of having an iffy finish from time to time so regardless of what brand you get it really seems to be the luck of the draw. again tho i agree when i pay 1000plus for a gun you would think the finish would hold better. o and glad to hear you like your kimber regardless of this minor issue. im a fan of kimber tho i wont say they are the end all be all but i think they are a cut above many others out there. it just seems most people on this site would have you think that kimber is gonna blow up because it has mim parts and the shwartz safety. more and more manufacturers are using mim and the safeties because of cost and lawyers. its becoming a fact of life unfortunately.
I had that same pistol and I found the finish on the frame very easy to chip or scratch. Finish on the slide was better, but it wore very fast and seemed thin.
On the up side the gun functioned just fine and was very comfortable to wear on my hip compared to an all steel frame 1911.
I have the same pistol and a tactical entry II and don't have any wear on them even after carrying them in kydex but every gun is different. I wouldn't worry about it though. Put some more wear on it.
That seems a bit excessive for a new gun. I have an SIS pro with no wear (different finish). Id be pissed, contact Kimber.
Mine has the same thing, also has holster wear. Just what happens when you use the pistol. I carry my ultra carry CDP II all the time and it's starting to look like hell after three years.
At the end of the day it's a tool and the performance is my main concern.
Consider it character! However I prefer a stainless gun that way finish problems are less of an issue.
I have the same gun, I have wear on it also, but not there. Along guide rails and such. I us this in three gun and as my home defense gun. I love my Kimber....

I contacted Kimber and they offered for me to send it in to them to be refinished for free, but I've decided against it because they said they are really backed up right now in there repair department and it could take up to 8 weeks to get it back. The wear and tear of a firearm doesn't bother me. And now that I've had 2,350 rounds down the pipe with absolutely no issues - I really shouldn't complain about anything. Love the pistol, wish the finish was better. But whatever
