which one to get
Im looking to get a Kimber as a carry piece. Ive got it narrowed down to the Ultra Carry Stainless or the Compact Stainless. Is it that much harder to conceal the little longer barrel, what about reliability issues of the 3in barrel. I had the Ultra CDP but not long enough to make an accurate decision, as I traded it to my dad for a safe. I loved the gun mainly for the shaved look. I didnt like the wood grips how are the black stock ones, or what about replacement grips.
Thanks
The 4 inch barrel is just as easy to conceal for me as the 3 inch. Reliability shouldn't be an issue with either with proper maintenance and spring replacement at the recommended round counts. Grips are easy to change out, I actually like the stock black rubber grips better than wood. Not for looks of course, but for the feel of the rubber and the extra grip it provides. If you like the "shaved" or melted look Kimber does make a Compact CDP. Personally I love the Compact Kimbers with an added magwell to give the grip slightly more length to it.
ultra cdp. 3" have a longer spring life than the 4".
FWIW, I have a Ultra Carry II that I have carried for the past 6 years and I love it. Added a SA magwell and Hogue finger grips to help with comfort, (I have large hands) I have carried for extended periods of time and have actually forgotten it was there. I have never had an issue with it that wasn't magazine related and it will ring a 2 x 2 steel plate at 50yds all day.
Having said all that, IF i had to do it all over, I would probably go with the 4'' barrel. It will tuck just the same as a 3'' and you will get a slight increase in velocity. I cannot say one way or the other as to the springs wearing on the 4'' quicker than the 3''
kimber recomends spring change at 800 rounds on 4"
and 1500on a 3"
if i remember correctly
Right when you think you got it narrowed down I came across the Springfield ultra compact its got a half inch longer barrel I'm liking anyone have a run in with them

If you can hide a 3 in. you can hide a full size. The one reoccurring thing I hear about compact 1911's is dependability. Everyone say's the compact's have to be perfect in every way to properly function. JMB did not design a compact, and just possibly there's the problem.
