****Custom Shop Turn Around Time: 11 months 2 weeks**** UPDATED PHOTOS
Any of you guys send in your pistols for a Tactical Package? If so, what kind of turn around time were you guys looking at? I sent mine in back in April, and was told back in August that it should be coming in some time in Oct/Nov. I just called today, and spoke to CS guys, and they mentioned probably lookingmore like December.

Not pissed of by any means, but man, I really miss having my 1911 around. The gentleman said that the hold up was in the refinishing part of the process. I hope it's close to being done, I think the anticipation is what's really getting to me.. Anyway, any input would help.
Well here it is!!! After getting it in, I took her out for 400 rounds and was flawless.. One FTF after about 350 rounds, and alot of brass to the face.. I want to put another 200 rounds through the gun before I decide what to do about the brass to the face.. I am guessing extractor tension. We will see.. All in all, the Tactical Package was $850 another $200 for parts and shipping. I added NM Barrel, SS barrel bushing, and SS FLGR, so that with shipping was another $300 on top of the $850 for a total of $1150. Hope you guys like!!

Bueler?

No, not Bueler, sorry, but I have gotten a hold of the CS reps a few days ago, and an was told to stand by for an email on the status. A couple days leter, the email came and I was informed that my S70 Repro is with a gunsmith at this time. No lead time was givien because the unpreeditability of the time that it will spend with the smith. It's been quite some time, and I sent this year in April. So I am guessing that Colt is really backed up right now. At first I was quoted 9-12 weeks, and its been around 30 weeks or so. Like I said, I am not pissed off at Colt by any means, but man, I just cant wait to get that pistol back. I had the Tactical Package done, as well as fitting a NM SS Barrel, FLGR, and S&A 25lpi checkered MSH with MagWell. CS Rep also mentioned that there may also be a hold up in the refinishing side of the process. I hope not because that would put me into 2012.
I will be sure to post any updates. As well as post pictures when she makes it back. It's been a long wait, but I am sure that it will be well worth it.

Look for it to be in refinishing for over 8 weeks, really closer to 16. I have had a frame at the refinishing department at colt since october 14, I was told that it would be there at a minimum until december 14. i had to go out and buy a talo colt to have during the wait because i hated not having a 1911 for so long.
It is my understanding that refinishing is done in batches....they hold pistols until batch is ready to send out and then they all go out at same time?

I see, so lead time can me almost any amount of time. Man, this wait is killing me. I dont expect them to hurry through the whole process, but I was hoping that initial delivery time frame would have more of what I was looking at. And I thought the 9-12 week wait was a long time. Oh well, it will be well worth it when it is all said and done. Thanks for your input.
I just sent mine in, just got the invoice. I was quoted 6 plus months; tac package on a stainless S70 repro.
i sent in my series 80 for tac package plus a few other things on jan 19, i was quoted to receive it back by march 19 , i received the gun back on sept.28. Good Luck!
I am guess that I am right around that 8 month mark at this point. I am guessing that there are alot of people out there sending their pistols in for that Tactical Package. Well thanks for the input, it's a little comforting to hear that I am not the only one that had had to endure an extended wait for the return of their pistols.
Would I be looking at a wait this long to send my 1911 government into colt for a sight upgrade? I just bought a 1911 Government in .38 Super and the white dot in the front sight came out already (brand new only 100 rounds). I was going to send it back to colt and just have them do an upgrade to some night sights or maybe those fiber rod sights if they have them.
I'm thinking i'm better off using a local gunsmith now?
I would say send it in.. but I have also heard that you cannot go wrong with sending your slide into Novak. I sent my S70 in early April and have still not receivedit.

!!! Makes want to vomit not knowing how much longer it will take. I called in mid November and was told it was a smith already. I really didn't think I would go into 2012 waiting for this work horse to come back. I really don't think that sending in your 38Super for just sights will take nearly this long. I have heard of this gentleman named Brent, and have been tempted to contact him about getting my pistol back. However I don't wanna be that one drama queen when this just may be the current turn around time frame that everyone is looking at. Going to be 9 months on January 5th that I sent it in. Maybe late January when the work order was confirmed and payed for. By the way, how do you like that 38Super??? I was so tempted to buy one about 2 weeks ago, but now I am looking hard at a Defender. Probably going to make the purchase later this month. Any which way you go, good luck. Post some pics when you get done what you want done. I'd like to see that beauty...

It was a Christmas miracle, I received my Colt back from the shop 4 days before Christmas. It was in for warranty, so it MAY have been pushed ahead in line.
So how long would a nickel refinish on a trooper be, you think? 6-8 months? They charge at the beginning or when they ship?
Not sure about the wait on a refinishing job, but i can't imagine it'd be nearly asong as a complete over haul on a pistol. The way it goes down, you send your pistol in to CCS VIA UPS or FedEx with a description of what you want done. In about 10-15 days, or you could call in, you will get an invoice. At that point you send payment and the work starts after that. I called a week after I sent in mine, got the work order number, and sent payment ASAP to start work ASAP. For just a refinish, I in no way can guess what it'd be... Maybe 6 weeks.. or maybe 12...
It's been exactly six months on my Combat Commander for the same package. CS left a VM and said it was in a gunsmiths hands and would be ready soon. Not sure what 'soon' means so I got my fingers crossed

This is as bad as waiting for a tax stamp to come back from the ATF

Even worse Ed, I sent my gun in April... Its gonna be a year. just moved into a nre home, and called to change shipping address... and they mentioned that they just recieved payment.. I corrected them.. no.. I sent Payment in April, and my pistol is still in the shop.. with ATF.. I bought a Commando in June, sent stamp in early July, and got back in the middle of December. So not as bad as the 10 month wait and counting. As for the anticipation, yes, just as bad! I will post pics as soon as it comes in.
Oof! As soon as I got the invoice I sent a check in, and it cleared a week later. I shoulda printed a copy of the bank statement online now that I think about it
Hopefully the (apparently one?) guys they have working was just on vacation for the holidays or something, and hopefully the backlog clears out in a hurry...
I'm not going to bother calling for an update for another few months; they quoted me 6, so I'll take that at face value and hold off until March or April...
Edited to add I sent my form 1 in (sbr) in the middle of March and the stamp came back right after the July 4 holiday
Hopefully it's faster next time around, but hey, I'll take what I can get

Yeah, this has been a long awaited pistol, I would like to post pictures and perhaps get some other members to post their prized possessions back from the CCS. Should be any day now I am guessing.. but we will see..

2/3/2012 Update
Spoke with CS today. They've had a tremendous response to the Tactical Package. While my Commander is in front of the gunsmith I'm told so are many others. Apparently he will do the same procedure on a group of guns before any of them get their next procedure done. I thought the gunsmith would work one gun, maybe two at time but that's not the case. In my case my gun is going off to finish which the rep said to plan on two months. I'm already at 8 months so it looks like this will be a 10-11 month ordeal when it's all said and done. I'm not complaining just anxious as a young boy waiting on his first bicycle
Hope one of you other guys get something back soon so you can post a couple pictures for the rest of us to drool over

Wow...I am looking at sending my M1991A1 off to Colt to get the tactical package and a few other things done. Good to know in advance that I can expect this kind of wait time. Would LOVE to see pics of your guys guns when they come back!
Thanks for the update! Since mine didn't go in until just after Thanksgiving, I guess I have a wait ahead of me

mines been there since jan 23rd for service repair work. got the repair order in the mail today and was told 5 months on warranty work.
I love their guns but thats just nuts.
Just for shiggles I called Colt today (finally found the invoice

)...the invoice was dated 11/15. The guy I spoke to said I could expect 10+- months...so late/end of summer-ish, his paraphrased words.
Figured as much, but it's oddly pleasing (well, satisifying at least) to hear it said by someone else...
So, the waiting resumes

Update, got my S70 back a couple days ago!!! Sweet gun.. good feel. I'll post pictures later.. camera is down right now...

Srsly!
Pics Up!!!
NICE!! Now I can't wait to get mine in!
Brass to the face - check three things:
Well first, did it do that before you sent it to them? Otherwise -
A) where's the brass striking the ejector? You may need to move it's contact point down (or up, if it's striking at the very bottom and punching it straight up); the guys at Colt should be able to do that easily, not sure if they fit an extended ejector or not to your gun...come to think of it, I don't know if they're going to fit one to mine either
B) Is there any brass rubbings on the inside of the ejection port? It might be trying to punch the brass out too low, striking the side of the slide, and bouncing up straight into your face...(this goes hand in hand with A above)
C) how's the firing pin stop/extractor interface? Is it loose; is the extractor clocking? If it's ejecting all over the place, it might be this. An oversized (or at least larger) firing pin stop should take care of it; you may be able to get one drop-in from Colt, or again send it back...alternatively, using a proper punch, you can slightly peen out the side of the firing pin stop (if it is indeed a bad/loose fit) and tighten the fit up that way.
It's a little disappointing that they'd ship a gun that ejects brass that way; it's probably very low on their list of things to check (functioning, etc come way ahead obviously), but I've heard they are pretty responsive to requests like this from other forums regardless...
ETA - 11 months, yeah, that jives with the August or so guesstimate the guy gave me when I called the other week to make sure it was progressing as scheduled, they got the payment, etc
ETA2 - I just noticed the magwell; was that your addon, or did they put it on as part of the package? I don't recall it being a part of the package is why I ask..
What kind of barrel is that? If It is a Colt, why did you have to ship it to them? Can you buy one from them directly?
I loved the way it looks, BTW, congrats!!! I am searching for a Govt size to get that package done to it.
I added several parts that upped the price another $300. NM Barsto barrel, that they supplied, wanted to upgrade MSH to one with Magwell, SS barrel bushing, and SS FLGR with plug. I thought the barrel would be a Colt barrel as they use in the Combat Elite I think. Turned out to be a Barsto, which is nice either way.. I couldn't be happier with my selection of additional parts that i had added to Tactical Package.
Oh yeah, also added Skeletonized Commander Hammer, and Black stain wood flat bottom grips to merry up with Magwell...
Oh, and the shipping was $30... So additional parts was $270..
Slide to frame fit seems to have been adjusted. Before there was some rattling when shook in condition 1, now less rattling, tolerances seem tighter.. the barrel bushing is definitely the tighest I've disassembled. The finish is Cerakote Black. I've already banged it up a bit, but this is by no means a safe queen. It will be my primary carry, get out of a shitty situation, get me to my Commando gun. It may not be be the prettiest piece.out there, but its a definately a work horse. Which is what I intended it to be when I started.
great pics...what finish did you choose?
ETA: did they do any work on the frame to slide fit? I have a MKIV 70 I am considering sending in but man it is loose.....

Ahh, nice! Ok, that explains all my questions
Yeah - Barsto barrels are about as good as you're going to get short of getting a visit from magical barrel-making unicorns

The AMU uses them, and we all know how anal those folks can be when it comes to repeatable accuracy.
I really can't wait for mine to show up now! HURRY UP COLT! I've got a couple Stainless EGW oversized firing pin stops on order that I'll fit to it when I get it back (should have thought of that before I sent the gun off to Colt but oh well...it'll give me something to do anyway). The smaller radius really helps with recoil control and follow up shots. Not to mention prevent the possibility of extractor clocking.
How's the dehorning on it? The last two new Colts I bought (the S70 I sent to Colt and a Combat Elite I've since sold)...well, let's just say I could swear Colt sharpened all the edges before shipping them out for sale

It was enough so that holstering them would shave bits of leather out of the holster..
Very nice! How's the accuracy compared to before you sent it in? What about the trigger job? I added a few additional parts on top of the tactical package myself. I'm just starting my wait so it'll probably be Christmas before I get mine back.

I didn't test for accuracy before I sent it in. But its shot great before, and now just freakin awesome!!! The trigger is really nice. Very crisp, and about 4lbs. I have checked it, but ill try to get specifics on that soon. The fitting is by far the nicest I've handled.. lock up is very tight, but not action is smooth. I couldn't be happier and neither will you when yours returns..

That's great to hear...I think once a few more members get their pieces back we need an official Colt Custom Shop Pic Thread

Sweet...very sweet

Glad to hear somebody got their pistol back.
My Combat Commander was shipped to CCS on May 9 last year so hopefully I'll see it soon.
FedEx just called to tell me I have a package from CT arriving tomorrow...so either I got drunk and ordered something last night

, or Colt is sending me back my 1911!
I work midnights so I may not be able to update tomorrow, but I certainly will by the weekend!

Post Pics!!!!! Right Now!!!!!

I posted this in the night crew thread in GD, I'll repost it here -
The 1911 -
I don't have photos of it yet...it got to my house literally as I was on my way to bed. FedEx's tracking site had it listed as "at destination depot" literally up until the package was in my hands; they just kind of skipped the whole "out for delivery" status. Which was highly annoying. (and why I was headed for bed, I figured why stay up if they're not going to get it to me today...)
Anyway - I did spend some time finger-fucking it...it's a work of art

VERY nicely dehorned, beavertail was fit beautifully, they enlarged the ejection port and scalloped out the front (easier to eject live rounds) and flared the rear to prevent damaging extracted cases. They left the stock ejector, which is fine...extended ones are nice in theory but with a bad extractor it can lead to a round slipping out and detonating when ejecting, by the ejector piercing the primer. There's a thread on this exact thing over on Brian Enos' forums, I believe. (or it was one of the other 1911 boards, I forget which, but it was a recent thread from a couple days ago)
They replaced the stock short trigger with a long one, front strap was nicely checkered, sights were replaced with Novak night sights, thumb safety is a Novak extended thumb safety (pretty much identical to a Wilson thin tactical thumb safety, same profile, but the pad is slightly wider), MSH replaced with a flat checkered one, mag well nicely enlarged...it just looks and feels great.
Slide to frame fit is actually pretty good; it rattled some before I sent it off, and it still rattles a bit now, but it doesn't seem to rattle as much, if that makes any sense. It's certainly not supermatchgun tight, but it's not exactly "seen hard use in two wars" loose, either.
They definitely shot it before sending it back; a) I sent them the gun after I detail-cleaned it so there was zero carbon anywhere, and b) they obviously had to clean it after cutting on it.. It had carbon at the usual spots indicating it had gone through I'd say at least 5 rounds, maybe a full mag.
Hopefully when I get home I'll be able to snag some photos
The only niggle? I requested the rear night sights be yellow and the front green. All the sights are green. Not a big deal, the request was such that if they couldn't do it, green all around would be fine...so, as such, while I "wish" it were yellow, it's fine that it's not.
(Note: After I wrote this in the GD thread, I checked Novak....err, they don't offer night sights in yellow tritium

So, I got what they do offer, which is green

The yellow ones I've seen were Meprolights, which Colt doesn't source...no big deal, and now I know that

)
Plus - timeline: 6 months almost to the DAY from when I sent it to them. I'll take that over waiting another month for yellow rear sights to come in, any time

I think the reason they got mine in 6 months was because it was stainless and didn't require much in the way of finishing when they were done with it; I know blueing takes some time and labor, and other finishes are farmed out and done in batches.
Hopefully on Friday I'll be able to take it out to the range; I'm not going to bother taking it apart and cleaning it until after I can fit in a range trip.
The one thing I did when I got it back home was swap out the factory double diamond stocks for some G10 stocks I had laying around in black/grey; they look simply awesome on a stainless gun. I'll try to get photos when I get home in the morning

Very nice Evil. How'd you get so lucky getting it back in a reasonable time?
Yes Ed, very nice indeed!!! I have been thinking about getting a SS model but too many other projects in the works... But I love the look of those Mil-Tac grips with that SS finish. Damn nice!!! I think there needs to be a thread of all pistols out there with CCS work.. Itd be nice to see the end product of everyone's ideas.
I think part of the turn-around time was because mine didn't need a barrel/bushing fitted to it (they even dehorned the bushing!! I was surprised at that!)...
But, honestly, I think the biggest time saver was that it was stainless and didn't require all of the work that goes into blueing or some of the other finishes. A brush and a quick polish they can do in-house; they probably didn't need to send it out to have it redone. Since they're now working in batches of guns (so I hear anyway)...that's one less batch process that it needed to go through.
But - that's purely supposition; I honestly couldn't give you a factual reason why

I'm just glad it came out the way it did!

I mentioned this earlier! If there isn't one by the time I get mine back I will start it myself
Ed, nice pistol man! She turned out really nice.
From my thread in the 1911 subboard here:

Weeeeeeelll......it might %100 be me, but for some reason I can't seem to hit where I'm aiming with it since the work

Prior to the work being done it wasn't difficult to shoot out a 1" round red dot sticker stuck on a paper plate at 25 feet...now it seems to be "clustering" to the left quite a bit, as in on the rim of the paper plate now.
Now - it is %100 possible it's me and my shooting; it's a "new" gun, longer trigger, etc.
It's also possible they boogered up the barrel bushing or barrel itself when working it up

I just don't know.
Later this week/weekend when I get more time I'll be taking it and a couple other 1911's to the range; it's entirely possible I was spoiled by the match-prepped gun I've been shooting in the mean time (trigger very very slightly north of 3lb, nice big sights, accurized with a hard-fitted barrel, etc)...so I just don't know if it's me yet, or not. Shooting it along side a couple other 1911s should tell me all I need to know. I'll also probably wind up swapping out the long trigger for the stock short trigger - I'm just very used to it by this point, and that may be part of the issue. It also might be the sights...I had a Combat Elite for a little bit but never really shot with Novak Night Sights. It might be a perception issue.
Having said all that - it's truly a joy to shoot now. The front strap checkering is outright comfortable at the range (though it may be why it's shooting to the left, so grippy!

) and for the first time ever, I was able to put more than 100 rounds through it without losing a chunk of my right hand or needing to wipe off some blood along the way

There were a couple of instances of it chucking brass back at my face instead of punching it out to the side, but that should be pretty easy to troubleshoot and fix (stock ejector). I have an oversized EGW firing pin stop with a slightly beveled bottom edge I had fit to it before I sent it off for work; I'll swap that in and see if it's the extractor clocking or something.
I honestly think it's a combination of the trigger (long and waay more grippy than I'm used to), the front strap checkering (again, very grippy) and me just being a bit spoiled by a highly accurized match-prepped 1911 with a trigger right around 3lb. I'm probably going to swap out the new trigger for the original one when I tear it down and clean it when I get home, and see how that changes how I shoot it.
I'm not particularly worried they goofed it up, I'm %99 sure it's me. I just want to make sure
