Colt commander which one 04860xse or 04691
Looking to buy a colt commander for mixed use ( general range , target, some cool weather CCW )
I have found 2 pistols to me locally a 04860xse stainless lightweight frame $945 and a 04691 blued steel frame $819 ...both are very nice pistols and are about $124 diff in price up charge for the stainless LW XSE
Curious on opinions , these are at 2 different stores so it was hard to get an idea of weight comparison And what upgrades does the XSE have over the basic blued model . The finish was very nice on both
In the big picture 124 bucks is not a lot based on how much both cost - I want to get the best
I own and carry the standard S80 (stainless) and my brother owns and carries the LW SS XSE. Both are excellent guns. I carry OWB and my brother carries IWB. We both prefer the ones we have. There is a noticeable weight difference, especially since I changed out the plastic MSH to steel on mine. The prices you mention seem about right, maybe a bit high on the XSE.
Honestly, I think you have two things to consider...weight and front cocking serrations....if that matters to you. You will be pleased with either one.
Almost forgot...the blue S80 Commander has the classic Commander hammer and standard grip safety, whereas the SS model has the "enhanced" hammer and the "duckbill" style grip safety which seems to be a love it or hate it thing. I love it. Check Colt's website, they have a very good feature comparison with images of each.
ETA: XSE series also come with Novak 3-dot sights...(they are not night sights though)
Thanks for the reply , they looked fairly similar
I was more wondering if the XSE enhanced one had other "hidden" improvements such as slide fit up,...??

In my opinion, they are more alike than different. The XSE series is maybe "finished" a little better, but mechanically speaking...no difference. I see no difference at all in overall fitting of parts including slide to frame. The XSE's just have some have extra "goodies" out of the box like the sights (probably the single most significant difference), front serrations, LW option, 8rd mags, beavertail/duckbill safety, etc. Like I said, the SS S80 model (O4091U) Is very close to the XSE in regard to features and is the real bargain IMO.
Here's mine with a nice set of VZ grips and also with Hogue wraparounds....(the cheesy black plastic factory grips are the only negative on this model)

Wow love the stainless commander with the vz grips thanks for sharing
I have the 04860XSE. Received it as a wedding gift. People say the aliuminum frame isn't as durable as a steel frame, but if you can live with that, use the correct poundage recoil spring, and don't batter it with +P+ loads, the LW Commander should last you a life time. I love mine, very lightweight and reliable.
