Just looking for some hands-on experience with the Colt Special Combats, looking for overall fit and finish, reliability, and parts. Are you just paying for the name, or is it worthy of a "Semi Custom" title? Trying to figure out if I should buck up some more cash for a Les Baer

Myself I dont think its worth the money... a friend had one that always jammed.... he sold it and now is happy with his commander and wilson.

pretty though, seem to hold some resale value. He couldnt get it sold on gunbroker , had it down to around I want to say 1150 or so.... He contacted a certain online gunshop, we all know, and they gave him 1100..

Im sure the Colt fanatics will be along saying its the best thing since sliced bread...and he is BIG TIME COLT>>COLT, if its not COLT its a COPY.....I had to laugh at him when he sold it...

If you are worried, ask to see the target before you buy it.

I like the Special Combat a lot, hell, I even replaced the pretty grips on my Combat Elite with the black ones off my Kimber to give it more of a SCG look:

However, for $1700-$1800, I damn sure wouldn't be looking at Colts.

Unfortunately there is a lack of local stock, so any SCG I get would be ordered for me. Not so concerned with accuracy as I am with the rest, a 1 mag grouping hardly tells a thing about the fit, quality of work, and overall reliability.

Would you be looking at a SCG for $1500?

Yep. That's more like where the SCG should be priced anyways.

Well I do not buy guns sight unseen. I would want to see the fit and finish and the target for that money.

I would buy a Glock sight unseen, a 1911, no way.

Fit and finish on Colt's can be hit or miss, and you don't want a miss.

Have two Special Combats,a two tone .45acp and a .38super stainless."Had" three Les Baers, the Colts i have might not be as tight as the Baers i had,but my Special Combats have been 100% reliable. The Les Baers proved to be not very reliable, for the money i was very dissapointed, value wise,i lost my ass on them as not many will pay a fair price for them either,no different than the Colts.
The Stainless SC i have is fitted and finish very well, and is very accurate indeed. The .45acp Special combat i have is a little on the loose side-frame to slide fit ,yet ive shot 1-1/8" groups at 25 yards various times.
Like to see what it would do on a ransom rest.I never shot a better group with my Baers, also had a beef with the thin bluing of the Baer that wore off very fast.Finish of the Colt Special Combats is superior to the Les Baers, the "bear coat" Les Baer finished guns have a better finish for a price more.
In my case,i favor a Colt Special Combat over a Baer for reliability purposes straight out of the box, none of my three baers were reliable straight out of the box,I also own Wilsons,Nighthawks and Ed Browns..and a bunch of Colts...and none needed any so called break in period or 1000+ rounds to be fully broken in or fully reliable. My .45acp Colt Special Combat has about 4500 rds thru it without a hiccup, still all original springs...still has its original slight rattle but still giving me my 1-1/8" groups....

Highly recommend the Colt Special Combat,if spending more...go to Ed Brown,Wilson............as far as Les Baers,i was very dissapointed. But each to their own.

I have an SCG in 38 Super with adjustible sights. I LOVE it. Most accurate gun I own. The test target was 15 shots into one hole at 15 yards, and it definitely demonstrates that when I shoot it. I can't say enough good things about it. I would definitely buy another. They are Colt's flagship gun for a reason.

I was priced at $1550, so I think I will wait for a few more months. Hopefully Colt puts some out.
It really only felt right to get a Colt for the 100th birthday, I do wish it was series 70 for parts standardization with my DWs though

$1550.00 is lower than the ones ive seen at stores lately,$1650+ is what ive seen.Colts MSRP on new Special Combats is $1830.00,so i dont
think you'll be seeing many at or under than $1550.00 ,keep an eye at Cabelas Gun library, they occasinaly get some in and sell them at a good
price, saw one about 2 months ago listed for $1300.00 ,sweet pistola !

I am a regular and my FFL is good at that price, tax will bring it up.
Problem is that their distributors havent seen jack for SCGs in a long time

I bought the Railgun instead. I wanted a duty gun. Fit is just as tight, and the trigger just as nice for almost $800 less. Special Combat is a beauty, but not at that price point for me. I'll give it this, the Gold Cup has nothing on the Special Combat. You want a target pistol the SC is nicer package imo..

For the price of the Special Combat, you can buy a used 70 series re-pro or a beat to hell actual 70 series and send it in to get it tricked out by the Colt Custom Shop.

From their Custom Shop PDF:
COLT Tactical Package – Includes action tuning plus complete dehorn; replace grip safety with Smith
and Alexander or Ed Brown with/without palm swell; replace safety with strong side or ambidextrous
tactical safety; checker front strap (20 or 25 LPI); enhance cut front strap; install flat checkered
mainspring housing (20 or 25 LPI); bevel magazine well; tune trigger; install Novak night sights.
Complete refinish in customer’s choice of available Colt finishes.

That's what I plan to go with when I get a 1911. That or an STI

I have a SCG in 45 acp in hard chrome. The gun is great but a few things I am not thrilled with. The ambi safety was not fitted properly. I replaced it with a high polished SS one sided safety. The frame to slide fit is a bit loose but that is common with colts. It is a very accurate and reliable gun. I paid 1275 shipped from buds a while back.

I would not buy one at 1500-1700. At that price I would start to go custom. Like a used wilson or brown.

The hard chrome cleans very well.

It you want good bang for your buck get a Gold cup trophy. Mine shoots great and I favor it over the SCG.

Good luck.
