My P22 suffered a massive failure today ETA Damn thing broke AGAIN!!!!!

I was shooting my P22 today, and on the second or third mag of Remington Golden bullet, I saw the slide coming at me and hit me in the cheek.

No blood or injury, but the P22 slide is done. It hit me right under the eye, that is why you always wear safety glasses!

We managed to find the spring by using a floor magnet on wheels, and the front of the slide was about 15 feet in front of the firing position, and slightly to the left.

The barrel is not damaged or bulged, so I am still wondering how in the hell the front part of the slide got so far away.

So I guess it is time for a firm email or phone call to Remington.

The crack looks fresh with no predetermined weak points.

I'd notify Remington, Walther, and Smith and Wesson... something's wrong with that dust cover to come apart like that.

I was pretty stoked when I first saw one and
bought my first one next day. I am on my second
one just because I got a deal on that I could not
pass up. The hammer spring broke on the
second one with less than 1K rounds.
When I really got looking at these things,
they are pretty cheaply made. I like mine,
but I have relegated it to a training pistol
for new female shooters only.

I won't buy another one.

Be safe!

I thought the dust cover was the part of the frame that had the rail?

I'm staring to feel the same way about mine. I love the gun, it shoots great and have about 2k rounds on mine. My hammer is cracked and I'm waiting to see what else is going to fail.

Same thing happened to a P22 I sold a friend... His cracked further back.

Walther/S&W will fix it, but is scares me that I have seen this so many times. The slides must be made of pot metal.

One of the few times I can say the blame is not cheap GB but the gun itself. Cheap ass metal is cheap ass metal.

Seen this more than once on a p 22, mostly when running a can.

With that i have 5k through my wifes p22 almost all supressed with no sign of crackage (yea i, made up that word).

Contact sw or walther.

What is the manufacture date on that pistol?

Slide just snapped in two close to fully to the rear in the operating cycle, front part of the slide went for a ride propelled forward by the full force of the recoil spring while the back part continued to the rear and struck you in the face.

The slide cracking was a problem to the extent that they did a recall on some IIRC. they were badly made .22's that had I known how badly I would have skipped mine and gotten a ruger. my hammer cracked at the pivot point. had it completly cracked and been in recoil it would have hurt alot., the slide while heavy is heavy enough that it didn;t have much speed, and likely got some friction on the way back from both the hammer and the slide rails. I would not blame remmington I would talk to Smith ASAP and google up other p22 slide issues.

Just got off the phone with S&W, and they were apologetic, and got my address to send out prepaid shipping materials.

At least they don't give us any
hassles about shipping out
repair parts.

You might be right, but either way it is a disgrace that Walther would sell out their proud history by producing this sorry piece of clinton

Unfortunately, Umarax seems to make all of these .22s with zinc parts and chincy quality.

I know Umarax owns Walther, but if you get your hands on any .22 Umarax/"Walther" makes it feels like a toy. I am happy real Walthers are made much better.

Really glad to hear you were not seriously hurt.
I had a P22 for a few years and sold it in a deal for an AR.
It was a good gun, but I agree they are not the best quality.
Mine had FTF issues and would stove pipe fairly often.
It was still fun to shoot was was fairly accurate.

the new ruger 22 looks nice. I'm tempted to get one.
Not sure if I'll get another P22 or not

Boy is this gonna cause a shitstorm.

Got it back on Thursday, took it out yesterday to try it out.

2 shots before the trigger went slack.

I looked at it, and it seems that the hammer spring broke.

Guess who is getting a call again in the morning?

When I order my hammer spring, I asked
if I could have two of them, and he said "No problem"...

I work in a gun shop with a indoor range. We have a Sig Mosquito brake in the same fashion. Mind you we are a new store that has opened with in the last few months and this Sig was brand new at the time of opening.

Sent mine off to S&W because the slide release was eating in to the slide.

They replaced the slide and sent it back.

Same exact problem. Slide would not lock back on the last round because the slide release ate a channel through the slide.

Luckily, before I could send it back for that, the entire slide cracked through at the ejection port.

I sent it back, again.

It has sat in my safe, unfired, from that day forward.

Yep, I can only wonder what will break next. I tried calling them today, but after 10 minutes, I was number 20th in line, so I said hell with it until tomorrow.

ETA: I got thru quicker today, he said they can't get the hammer spring alone, they have to ship out the whole hammer assembly.

The one pictured broke in an odd place as most go in the middle. Rimfirecentral has a section on P22 "fluff and buff" that has you buff off the burr that will eat into and cause the slide to crack. I did mine right away and after a few K down the pipe it's still fine. There should be no excuse that these are like a Taurus that you have to finish at home to make a better gun.

Makes me wonder if the Ruger SR22 will eat into P22 sales. I have a P22 as well and love the thing but the cheap-ass slide material does bug me.

How old was your gun? Mine broke in the exact place about a month ago. S&W has had it for 2 weeks as of today, and I haven't heard anything yet. They told me about 2 weeks before it could be looked at.

Hooray! This is what happened to my P22 5 years ago! I thought everyone said this was fixed.....lol. I love Walther, but the P22 is a complete POS.

You have a strange definition of "good gun".

What boggles me is people know about all these issues, but everytime some noob asks "should I buy a P22", you get all these posters saying how great the P22 is.
Their slides are made out of pot metal, the P22 "bible" is all about how to fix all the things wrong with the P22, and yet, people still say they are good guns and yes you should buy one.
WTF people? Get off the crackpipe.

And before you start saying I'm just a hater that doesn't even own one, I did own one.
It ejected all over the place: left, right, back at me, roll it out on my hand....
The safety turned itself on in recoil, then the hammer would snap it back off.
The front sight fell off repeatedly.
The trigger bars were eating the slide.
The only thing good about it was that the slide DIDN'T break.

Same here....i'm assuming you didn't really mean 5,000,000 rounds...

I have about 14500 through mine at this point(unknown round count from previous owner), almost exclusively CCI Mini-Mags. No issues.

Are they cheap guns? Absolutely, there's no denying that.

I have one and did this too. There are several fixes to apply. It makes the slide cycle much more smoothly and fixes the dig issue, but I agree it is bullshit to have to fix this stuff on new gun and most people probably don't have the nerve to do it.

i must be the odd man out as well. my siver slide 5" bb P22 has 31k+. it has issues, but considering what you guys have had happen they are minor. currently the biggest problem is the ear for teh firing pin safety wore off teh frame and i had to remove the FP block to make it work. S&W told me 1 month or more ot get it fixed because they'd have to replace the frame. the slide lock is troublesome, but a littel file work brought it back into line.

alot of the guns i see with slide failure are the short barrel models with black slides. i woner if this has any bearing? i keep a close eye on mine and its never shown any signs of cracks. IIRC teh sides are ZAMAK not pure zinc.
