454 raging bull
Opinions needed. Reliable?
I have one and like it. The single action trigger pull on mine is a lighter than I like but it has functioned just fine. I have found that I prefer .45 colt +P loads instead of the .454 as the recoil is a lot less. The full .454 loadings kick like a mule and I don't shoot them enough to feel comfortable at that level.
What length barrel did you go with? Blued or stainless?
I have the blued model and I want to say the barrel is 8 inches or so. The bluing on these are very nice.
Thanks
Do these have the taurus lock on them?
I don't know about the current ones but mine doesn't.
Got in on this a little late...anyhow, i have the rb 454 standard finish 6.5in bbl. I absolutely love it. It is a handfull for sure, but if your used to decent recoil its no biggie. Pistol is well made and a joy to have. Unfortunately i just sold mine to fund my next ar-15. But im sure i will have another in the future. Also, it's alot more of a "pistol" than the larger s&w's and will probably take down about any game currently roaming the earth.
I had one. Honestly I didn't trust it. I would be fine with the 44mag but the 454 is nothing to mess with. I kept mine for a couple years put a couple boxes of 454 down it. Sold it to fund a SW500 which I feel is worlds ahead of the RB454.
What do you mean didn't trust it? Did you have problems with yours or did you just want a more powerful cartridge?
wow....... 4 months late responding to this thread...better late than never
Ive owned mine for 10 or so yrs...no problems...not a 1
mine is the 10" barrel.
its never seen factory loads (are you kiding, have you seen how expensive store bought is ?)
29.5 grains of 2400 pushing a horandy 250gr xtp moving an average of 1600 fps....definte wow factor. no signs of over pressure (ever)
Ive been shooting my bull for many yrs, I had a chance to pull the trigger on the s/w 50......I can say, that hands down, the bull shots a hell of alot better than a smith 50
I had a couple small issues with mine that were more than likely ammo related. I guess in the back of my mind I was afraid of the quality/strength to hold up to the 454 loads. I mostly shot the 45lc+p rounds. I am sure it would last forever like that. I think the 44RB would be awesome.
the pistol is extremely well designed. from the grip to the trigger/hammer to the intergrated muzzle brk.
I was cautious at 1st when I started loading for the bull..... 29.5gr,s of 2400 powder for a 250gr projectile is something to give strong research on. once I chrono,d my loads and realized that it is infact a "raging bull" and that the pistol works well for what it was designd for, ive shot it with accuracy and confidence that of which i gained from expierence....not hear say.
anybody who shoots my raging bull, is almost always intemidated/scared by it at 1st. some dont trust it because of the lack of knowledge and expierence with it. but once they get used to it and trust it, they dont want to put it down
granted, i dont shoot it that much, but when i do, I ll hit targets out to 200 yrds with it standing open site.
its expensive to shoot though,,,even if you reload.
id buy a 44 mag rag/bull if i didnt aleardy have 2 ruger super blackhawks.
I have a stainless 8.5" one.
The only problem I've had is almost certainly just my gun. But, sometimes, with full power .454 Casull ammo (as opposed to light loads), the firing pin will get stuck in the primer. A little wiggling frees it, and one of these days, I'll take it apart and take the edge off the firing pin just slightly to prevent this.
Beyond that, it's been flawless for hundreds of rounds. If you get one, handload for it. If you make even 200 rounds for it, you will pay for a Lee press and dies with the savings.

roger that on the handloads. mine has never seen factory ammo.
is the full power ammo you speak of your home roll,d or store bought?
