how are taurus .357 revolvers?
a friend of mine is moving out of state, and the only pistol in his collection that i would be remotely interested in is the revolver.
of course ive not seen it yet and dont know the condition, but im just asking over all, do taurus revolvers have a decent track record?
I'd much rather have a Ruger.
Taurus are better than they used to be but still have quality issues.
Heres the deal with Taurus they make some real good guns, I've had a 92,99, and a 66 and they were all flawless I also had a 24/7pro 45 that was a big piece of junk you'd be better off with a Hipoint. The problem is you mite get a great one BUT you mite get a real crapper and if you do then you'll have to TRY and deal with their customer service and thats where your real problems will just begin. Search on here there are topics about their service. I'd go with a Ruger or a Smith & Wesson you mite want to chech out Charter Arms also.
I had a older model 65 for a few years and it was one hell of a little revolver, sold it to fund a PT92 and which i still have that is also one hell of a good little pistol [older version]
It seems the vast majority of complaints with taurus guns come from thier new poly lines. their revolvers have had some issues in the past but id say the number of revolvers that have had issues is on par with other bigger companies and nothing to out of the norm and if you take into account alot of new shooters buying taurus because the price and how many "gunslingers" you have flinging the cylinder shut like they see in the movies and not taking care of thier weapons id but the number evens itself out.
rugers of course are built like tanks but if given the chance on a good taurus revolver i wouldnt pass it up just because the name on the side. their poly guns im alittle more skeptical of.
bottom line, their revolvers are good to go for the most part. look it over and check the timing and you should be GTG
I have a stainless .357 Tracker 4" and i got my sis a .38 snub, no problems with either and both are accurate. 800+rd through the .357.
Also have a PT145 millenium pro, no problems with it either, except one of my friends had a nosedive a few times, but he was limpwristing like crazy...
Like some have said, everyone makes some lemons, but i haven't found one yet.
That said, my carry gun is a Glock29 unless i'm hunting, then it's the Tracker
ETA: the Tracker's soft grip started to split after about 500rd, so i got the Hogue grip.
Not mine, but looks like this:
Not a Smith or Ruger, but generally decent guns for the money. Examine closely before you buy, most problems can be identified with a careful inspection. Lots of Taurus hate on this board, but I've never had any problems with the three I own (PT22, 96, PT1911).
Most common issue i've seen, on 3 different Taurus revolvers, is a burr left on the index teeth in the center of the cylinder. A tiny 0.005 burr can cause it to drag heavily and feel like it's locking up. A sharp razor or a very fine stone can flip this burr off and fix it for good, but it's one of the main reasons guns get sent back.
I only have one Taurus revolver to base this on, but it is my favorite handgun. It is a Model 66 6" barrel, adj. sight, satin nickel, and it has a great trigger. Shoots great with 158gr JHPs. This thing is old circa 1990. The factory grips were horrible, but I quickly replaced those with Pachmayr.

the model 65's and 66 are nice revolvers. i dont think i have heard of one having an issue. my 65 was very nice and left nothing to be desired for a woods gun. hogue grips were needed though lol
My 608 has been flawless, I'm very happy with it.
I have a s.s.model 66 that I am plenty happy with.
I have a S.S. 669 and blued 607, both work and shoot great.
I had a model 66 with 4" barrel I loved. The ex-wife got in a divorce.

oh man....take the car, the house or even the kids but leave the dog and guns alone!
sorry to hear that...
I have three 66 6in 605 2in 94 4 in all are great guns if the price is fair 250 -300 I would take it

I love my 605 w/3" barrel. I call him spanky.
i have had 1 for about 10 years now - no complaints yet
double tap
I have a 605 which is similar to a chiefs special is .357 Mag, with the stock grips is wasn't fun shooting .357mag. I changed out the grips which is much better now. I also have a Judge Public Defender, I have never had any problems with either revolver, and enjoy shooting both. Both I bought new the Judge last year and the 605 about 5 years ago.
Our work unit has 34 members. Four of us own Taurus semi-auto pistols and revolvers and all four of us had problems with them. The two Taurus revolver owners had to send both guns back to Taurus for repair right out of the box. Another guy and I own Taurus .380 pistols and both had to take a ride on a slow boat back to Brazil for repair. I would stay away from Taurus.

what was wrong with them ?
I have two .357s and a 9mm nothing wrong with them
66 and GTG Do not run real hot loads thru it same as my other weapons but affordable and reliable.I still buy Taurus and altho some do not like I own a .38 special five shot and a PT709 and both run great and reliable.Looking for a Circuit Judge when they show up in stores next
Dan 1802,
Both .380 pistols had feeding problems. Mine had magazine problems. Mine had a broken extractor after less than 50 rounds. The other guy had a bulge in the receiver where the take down pin sits and the spring that locked the pin in place slipped out of position. Mine took over 2 months to repair and get back to me after Taurus received my 380. The other guy was not so lucky and had to wait much longer.
Both revolvers would not fire all of the rounds in the cylinder. The problem appeared to be in the same position on the cylinder of each revolver. One of the revolvers had a binding problem at one point on the rotation of the cylinder. One revolver took months to get back from Taurus. The other guy is still waiting for his revolver to get back from Brazil.
I would not recommend any Taurus product for self defense use. If you want to take a chance on a target pistol fine, but nothing you would carry and use to save your life or the lives of your family members.
Update 11/03/10: I traded off my Taurus TCP and will never buy another Taurus product.

your hand feels like its been in a spankin match after shooting it.
I like mine too. LIght strikes in d/a on winchester silvertips, but the rest of the box shot fine in SA. Other winchester ammo runs fine in it...silvertips are the only I have ever had an issue with.
I have a 2'' 605
It's surprisingly accurate, it feels a little gritty in the trigger but it's held up fine for the last 3 years.
My 709 slim had to go back to Taurus because it couldn't get through an entire 7 round magazine without failures to extract at least twice. Got it back and ran 500+ flawless rounds through it.
Taurus is hit and miss imo.

I have a 2" 605 also. DA pull is a little gritty but SA is fairly light. To me it's brutal with .357 loads. with .38's it behaves nicely. I ccw it more than anyything else. Just drop in pocket.
I think it's fairly accurate. The farthest I've shot it is 25 yards. Grouped 4-5" with .38 handloads. I'm sure the gun could do better but I apparently can't.
