Simply what would go with if these two calibers were only avalible and why?

As a side note for a question for the 9 x 18 does it use the the same reloading bullets as the .380?

There are two 9x18's.

The 9mm Makarov and the 9mm Ultra.

The 9mm Ultra is a lengthened 9x17 (aka .380 ACP) and uses 0.355" bullets.

The 9mm Makarov uses a modified 9x19 (aka 9mm NATO) case and uses 0.364"-0.365" bullets.

Since the 115gr JHP rounds are no longer imported from Russia and Speer stopped production of their Gold Dot bullet, this leaves Hornady and Buffalo Bore for SD ammo.

If you had to choose, ditch the 9mm Makarov and keep the .380 ACP.

This, keep the .380acp between the two.

.380. While the 9Mak is a bit more potent, there are far more loadings available for the .380.

Sorry, the 9x18 mak does not use any modified 9x19 case. The 9x19 is a tapered case and the 9x18 is a straight walled case. They are NOT the same. you got the bullet diameters correct though.

9x18 is slightly more powerful than .380 ACP, but not much.

Actually, you can load 9x18 Mak using 9x19 cases. Does not sound like you handload.

You cut the case down to ~0.705" and then expand the case mouth to accept the larger diameter bullets.

9X18 is hotter and cheaper than 380.

None of the JHP 380 rounds have enough penetration to even think about passing the FBI protocols.

9X18 is the clear winner in this horse race.

Get a Vz. (CZ) 82 and be happy.

I like the Makarov a lot, but you have way more guns and ammo choices in .380 acp. That said, the Mak is a tiny bit more powerful than the .380 acp.

I would prefer the 9mm Browning Long, but that's just me.

Of the 2 cartridges actually mentioned, the .380 would be a superior choice, by virtue of the tremendous variety of loadings available. The 9x18 is mildly superior ballistically.

I doubt any one could tell the difference in performance without a chronograph, however.

That's exactly how I handload for the 9x18......also use hardcast bullets bought in bulk for plinking ;)

I'll be the odd man out and say go with the 9mm Makarov (9x18 Mak) caliber for everything. It's cheaper, more plentiful and just seems to work. Or maybe it's because the CZ-82 or the PM always seem to work flawlessly. Stick with the original 92gr to 95gr FMJ loading in 9mm Makarov and you can't go wrong. All of the Russian-made 9x18mm Makarov ammo tends to run slightly over 1,000fps from either a PM or a CZ-82 on average.

The only .380acp-chambered weapons I've ever owned that were flawless were the CZ-83. a Bersa .380 and the Beretta 84. Everything else was a crap-shoot. Good luck.
