.44 mag 340g +P+ safe in a pistol?
was shot at cabelas for free shipping so the box only cost me about 10$... to much for my super redhawk?
i can read... says its gtg on the super redhawk... gonna have some fun this weekend at the range... thinking of giving my buddy 5 .44 specials and one of these suckers in the cylinder :) (he did the same thing to me when i started shooting with his .357mag)
Buffalo Bore has this posted for their ammo
Heavy .44 Magnum +P+ Ammo - 340 gr. L.F.N. - G.C. (1,478 fps/M.E. 1,649 ft. lbs.) - 20 Round Box
NEW HEAVY 44 MAGNUM +P+
This new load is designed ONLY for certain firearms. They are as follows; Ruger Red Hawk, Ruger Super Red Hawk, Ruger Super Blackhawk or Vaquero, Freedom Arms Model 83, Taurus Raging Bull, Colt Anaconda and Dan Wesson Revolvers. Suitable rifles include T/C Encore, "modified" Marlin 1894 (see next paragraph), Winchester 1894, any rifle with a falling block action and the Handi Rifle. We get hundreds of emails asking if this load can be fired in S&W revolvers or some firearm other than what is in the above list. The answer is NO. The above list is all inclusive.
Dang, that is some hot ammo. That is pretty close to what a .454 Casull load is rated.
Lead?

It's a gas checked bullet at a velocity that's certainly not outrageous. I don't get it.
I ran some of this through a RH that I hads a couple of years ago, it is EYEOPENING hot! If I were to head into big bear country with just a RH it's the load that I'd choose followed by Garretts 330 hammerhead.
It certainly doesn't sound fun to shoot. Let us know how it turns out though.

I neglected to think about the weight of the bullet. You're right - it's +P+, but at 340gr that still isn't going to have it screaming out of the barrel.

IIRC it's a 1400fps load. Never had a bit of lead left in the barrel of my RH after firing them.

Yeah, that's the second time in two days I stuck my foot in my mouth around here. The gas check and 1400fps ought to make that a reasonable proposition. I was thinking back to the first ammo I ever reloaded - they were some swaged .44mags - and how badly they leaded up my barrel.

Oh yeah swaged bullets and velocity are NOT a good mix!
i have some of the hvy 45colt +p 325gr at 1325 fps for my 4.2" ruger redhawk. not fun to shoot after a few rds but have fun with yours man.
Here's why I'm not a fan about these super-fast loadings: People who aren't educated about wound ballistics believe that extra velocity is the magic cure for self-defense ammo blues. These people are easily mislead and fall for glitzy advertising. I know that doesn't really apply here, but I just wanted to point that out.
Also keep in mind that you're liable to create some borderline safety issues with guns that aren't quite strong enough, and you could also create dangerous overpressure situations if the chamber of the particular gun is tight, the ambient temperature is high, or any other number of factors. You simply don't have much margin for error.
Pick the ammo to suit the particular application - don't just look for the hottest load.

I have to agree, faster is not always better. Ask a African PH that question and you will hear 1 word, Weatherby. I love Weatherby's but the added velocity reacts strangely in really big stuff from time to time, a 500@2100 does the job just fine.
