So, I found this old ammo that I got from a friend several years back. I kind of want to shoot it cuz why not?

It's unjacketed.

Tru Value baby!

I was gonna take my G19 and P228 to the range today. What's the worst that could happen?

edited to add: Apparently nothing. Besides being smoky as hell (reminded me of setting off smoke bombs at 4th of July) the rounds all fired correctly. I only shot at about 3-4 yards so I could make sure I would see them hit, and it gave me a chance to practice strong side and weak side single hand shots!

Kaboom could happen. But if it is factory ammo, I wouldn't worry about it.

However.... IF your gun has a polygonal rifled barrel, don't shoot lead in it. There is some question about whether poly barrels lead up somehow, causing higher pressures, eventually leading to kabarrel kaboom.

Back before everyone had the Internet I had a mail/phone order company that sold 3D, PMC, IMI, and S&B. I recently found several hundred rounds of the 3D 230gr LRN ammo packed away in a storage shed. I have a new Springfield 1911 that I will use to dispose of these left overs from about 15 years ago.

OP, if all you have of that ammo is what I see in your pics then it will be fine to shoot through your Glock. It is only after shooting a bunch of LRN ammo that lead will build up on the poly twist barrels that will cause them to lead up. Finish the shooting session with some FMJ ammo. It will help to clean most if any lead built up in the barrel.

Back in the mid '90s, I shot about 4000 rds of this through a P226....no problems at all......

It may be fine to shoot, but why take the chance? It is only 20 rounds, throw them in the misfire bucket at the range.

Uhh, see that's the way I'm leaning.

To address jmreagan's comment yes that is all of that particular brand of ammo that I have. I'm aware that non-jacketed ammo will deposit significantly more lead in the barrel. Is that really enough rounds to present a risk in one session?

I used to shoot lead realoads out of my first gen G17 all the time. No more than 100 at a time, and I always cleaned the pistol after every range session.

The problems today arise from all these numptys that think it's somehow a mark of manhood to never clean their weapon.

According to my risk assessment consultant, a serious occurrence takes place on an average, for every 300 unsafe acts.

The odds were in your favor but I wouldn't have done it myself.

Ammo is cheaper than eyeballs and fingers.

Back in the day I had a S&W 3914, and being a poor kid in my early twentys those were all I shot. At some point, due to my crappy cleaning jobs I used to do, the amount of lead being left in the chamber became more than the amount that I was scrubbing out, and the gun started having issues going fully into battery. Lead deposits plus dirty burning powder left a mess. My issues were after shooting well over a thousand rounds of the stuff. I wouldn't worry about a box of the things, just do a better job cleaning your firearm than usual.
