Need light .38spl loads Edit got a Taurus 66
My wife is hesitant to shoot the .38 i got her. I would like to break her in with some light loads. I was thinking cowboy loads. Where can i order some cowboy loads? Edit: and what should i get?
edit: i did google the topic and found some. I would like to get some direction, so i don't buy the wrong stuff.
I used 148 grn wadcutters to get my wife used to shooting a 38. They have very little recoil, a mild report, and my Model 15 will drive tacks with them.
These could be just about the softest shooting .38's I've ever shot. I've used them in my LCR and GP100. They're like shooting .22lr in the GP100.

For SD
Standard pressure 38spl
The 110 CD by Hornady
I did well in the Dr. testing
I started my wife with hollow base wad cutter 148gr
She didnt like +P loads even with a heavy 640 j frame
Man those 148 gr WC are fun to shoot plus they are so accurate

What gun did you get her?
Cowboy loads should work.
Also some indoor ranges have range ammo, in hollow base wad cutter.
See what it is load to.

I just got some 38 special 110 grain standard pressure that should be a pretty light load and its priced right for what it is

S&W 642
yeah, i would like to start her out on cowboy loads. Then move her over to SD. She is a pretty lady, but new thing always make her nervous. Once she gets a few shots down range, i bet she gets comfortable with it.

Just poster this on another thread.
When your lady moves to SD round...
My lady has a Off Duty 38 spl, very lite wt.
It is loaded with 125 gr NYCLAD Hollow Points,By Federal.
They list it on their web-page

The answer is to reload but––––-
Wadcutters are pretty light recoil wise but have gotten pricey
Remington makes a 130gr MC (metal cased?) that has recoil actually a bit lighter than the wadcutters
and is reasonably priced but I wouldn't count on it for self defence.
I am guessing you got your wife a airweight, get or borrow a all steel mid sized gun to start out with.
Many women are highly sensitive to noise and perceive the sharp bark of a pistol (or more specifically a snubbie)
as recoil. Go with foam earplugs under regular ear muffs and try to find a range that does not have a roof over head

130gr @ about 750fps
As you have found out by now the airweights are wonderfull guns to carry but misriable little snots to shoot
Remington green/white box. I think its a 158 grain lead bullet.
Its like shooting a .22 LR in my 4 inch GP100. I don't think I've ever shot a softer .38 load.
My ex gf (5'0, 95-100 pounds) shot 100 rounds of it in under an hour.

Use any of the 130gr JRN loads...Federal and WW make 'em too. Much cheaper these days than wadcutters and easy to shoot,,,well, as easy as anything will be if this is an Airweight. DocGKR has done some tests with standard .38Spl lead wadcutters and in both bare and clothed gelatin they make a surprisingly decent defense load all things considered.

The factory 148gr HBWC
In a 4inch barrel get around 700fps
hand loads
I like 2.7grs of bullseye + 148gr WC
For a slow bullet it can penetrate pretty well
I took a different path. She has shot bigger frame guns before, so I bought a used Taurus 66 4" from a friend. It is heavy, but not so big that she can't grip it. I am hoping the weight will help her manage recoil a little better. Once she gets used to shooting it, i can let her try the 642 on her own time. I am hoping to get her to the range saturday morning.
How do you like how i played that. I got another gun out of the deal. lol. It is a nice 1987 Taurus. Nice tight barrel to cylinder gap and very little cylinder wobble.
thanks again.

welcome
Good luck shooting
The misses and i took it out and it was a hit. She can easily handle it and i love it. The trigger is typically long, smooth and seem a little lighter than S&W J frames. It is more accurate than i am and i couldn't be happier. She was able to shoot it comfortably. We had a great morning, except she out shot me. lol. a few more trips and she will be ready for the 642.

Nice revolver. I've got the same thing, but I bought it in the 80's and new used it. Gave it to my folks for house defense. After dad passed I got it back. Now I've decided to add it to my rotation. Kind of nice to shoot a revolver again. Used to carry one for about 12 years, then we've always been issued pistols.
BTW, I did some looking on line and found some original wooden minimal grips (factory). Going to add some T Grips, make it fully retro.
Another vote for Fed Nyclad 125gr. Very soft shooting. Started both the wife and daughter on this with good results.
