What ammo for carry?
First off I have read the Best Choice For Defensive Ammo but I am looking more for personal opinion from the hive. I will be carrying a Glock 19 and am looking for 147 gr most likely (unless someone can show me a reason to use something else) and was looking mainly at Ranger RA9T or Speer Gold Dot. These two seem to be readily available. So whats your personal opinions/reccomendations?
Everyone has an opinion.Your ammo picks are just as good if not better than the general population. Sure some one from the 1980's will probably post some antique negative comment about 147gr and velocity.I like the Winchester PDX1 in place of the RA9B until they change that load over to the new bullet. The 147 HST is proving to be a good round also.
Any from the list is fine. I use Federal HST 147 gr +p in my glock 26. If I couldn't get that...I'd get the speer gold dots.
Another 147g HST user here. It has excellent ballistics, but Ranger-T is GTG as well. It's what I carry in .45
Another vote for the 147gr PDX1, it's now my carry load in my S&W M&P9c.
Tomac
Another +1 for HSTs.
ETA: Streichers has 147gr in stock.

I carry either 147 Gold Dots or RA9B in all my 9mms.
Is there any benefit to the 147 HST +p over the standard pressure 147 HST? Aside from velocity? And anyone know where it is available by the case

No need for the +P as far as I know. Pick any of the bullets from the recommended list and you're GTG.

I'm an HST fan myself, although I take them in the 230gr +p variety.
124 HST's in my XD
180 grain HST in M&P.40c
230 grain (RA45B) in 1911 gov.
FWIW I just picked up a G19 as well and got some 124 grain +P Gold Dots after reading a few posts like yours.
I too agree with your choices. I have a wide variety of Ranger that I have acquired over the past few years. Please don't flame me too badly here, but my thing is practice practice practice. If you get your shot placement right, that is the best thing. I like the top shelf hollow points b/c less chance of over penetration. I don't know your history, but training, even a refreasher class can help. Did I mention practice? I personally practice with 115 gr fmj in my 9mms, and 230 grain fmj in my .45s.
When I do shoot the high dollar stuff my shot placement is as good as with the practice ammo. Sorry to ramble on. Have fun shooting. I am retired & go to the range as often as I can.
Thanks,
Mark
Shoot both and determine what work's better in your weapon.
Does anyone have any opinions for Pow'R ball ammo?
Thanks for the input everyone. I am most likely going to use Winchester Ranger ammo just because I am having a hard time finding the HST in bulk(anyone have any leads on where to look) for a decent price. I now have another question though? Is there any real benefit to using 124 +p over 147 or vice versa? I have heard it both ways as far as the heavy bullet being the better choice as well as the lighter faster being superior. Just looking for input/knowledge on which is true or not, or what will be best for my intended use. Thanks again
ETA:The gun will shoot both loads without problems.

go to the LE win website and compare them
124gr +P T
124 gr +P B
147gr T
147gr B
I've been building my collection of Ranger Bonded 147's for when I get my CCW.
I guess I'll be the "old guy" from the 80's

Skip the 147's and get 124 +P gold dots or Ranger T 127 +p+. I personally carry the Ranger T's in my 19 and wouldn't waste my $ on any 147.
Not to beat a dead horse, but the current crop of modern 147gr. 9mm loadings are excellent, and in no way are comparable to the poor performing 147s that were available 20 years ago.
Times change sir.
I also like 147gr. I'm ustng Winchester PDX1.
Really any modern 147grn hollowpoints will do an excellent job. Federal HST, Winchester Ranger, Remington Golden Sabers, and so forth.
The kind that goes bang every time, you pull the trigger.

The 124 will perform in par with the 147gr. I would not feel under powered if I had to use 124 or even 115 in a pinch. Based on my sales stats the +P and +P+ both still sell well.I order 10% more of the 147 than I do of the other loads. That way the sales balance out rather than running out of the 147 before I get another order in.

checking my newish LE Win catalog
The Ranger RA9BA 124 +P drove pretty deep in the Heavy Cloth Geltest
P = 18.2
Ex .56
RW 124gr
Ranger RA9B 147
P= 15.8
Ex.58
RW 146grs
On the few occasions where I have to carry my M&P due to special concealment needs, it's loaded with standard pressure 147 grain HST and I have absolute confidence on it.

is it the full size
I forgot??
Jut got my CWP in, and put an order in at ATG for some Winchester Ranger 9mm and .45 (RA9T and RA45T). Heard nothing but great things about both.

Pick the one you shoot the best. Misses don't count.
However, lighter rounds don't penetrate as consistently as heavy rounds. That's why they aren't recommended. Imagine a 9mm round made of styrofoam. You could make it go 1100 fps or even 1700 fps but it still wouldn't penetrate much. Penetration scales better with the weight of the round as opposed to velocity. FPS only matters at rifle velocities.
<This is not GD - Z>
Anything in the 124gr or above flavor. Speer, federal, winchester are all good.
