Help finding/making an ambi safety selector.
I have a S&W Airlite PD Model 4040. It's a .40 DA/SA decocker. The gun was only in S&W's lineup for a year (or two.) I've never seen any negative press on it, and I've never had a reliabilty issue with it, so I don't know why it was discontinued so quickly. Maybe it just didn't sell.
Anyway, I gave the gun to a well-regarded gunsmith in the area who kept it for a couple of months as he tried to figure out how to install an ambi safety selector for me. S&W never made one, and he didn't have tools to make one.
Anyone here know of a machinist that could fabricate one for me? I'm no machinist, but I would think it would be relatively simple - mill a thumbswitch for the right side and weld it to the existing existing selector. You could secure it with an opposite thread screw drilled throught the thumswitch into the slector shaft. Or am I dreaming - unaware of the real difficulties in what I want.
DOH!

far easier and cheaper to just get one of these. I have a couple. since I am a lefty I ground down the left side with the dremel so it is not under my trigger finger but left enough to still manipulate it when needed.
So an ambi selector for an AR will fit a S&W 4040 pistol?
Don't think he realized you were talking about a handgun.
call Smith and Wesson! There used to be an option on their site to do this. Nice piece, use the right parts!
eta: do you have a pic of the right side of the pistol?

The gunsmith I took it to said he tried to get a positive response out of S&W for a month - maybe he really didn't try hard enough.
I'll call them. I love the pistol (and carry it,) but being left-handed without an ambi safety is a definite tactical deficiency.
I know, I've had a few of them. CALL THEM YOURSELF! Does the right side of the rear of the slide have a "cirlce" on it?

Yep - it does. I'll call them after the first of the year. Thanks a bunch!
No sweat. I though it was just a blued version of the Chiefs Special (with ambi). Should be just parts replacement.

My gun's not listed, but a call might bring me to my happy place.
You might even try talking to Brownells. IIRC all the 40 series are the same.
