4566 police trade-in w/loose rail
At a local shop yesterday, I fondled a couple 4566's that seemed to be in reasonable shape; they're asking $350 each. Both have minor holster wear and come with only one magazine.
Both have a pressed on, or maybe a riveted phosphated accessory rails. On one, the rail was very loose with maybe 1/64th showing between the rail and frame and rattled loosely. The second had the rail detached at the front and hanging and barely attached by the rear point. I field stripped and couldn't quite tell how these were mounted. They have a front and rear hole inside the frame where they attach to the rail. If I purchased, I'd just assume remove the rail and hope what remains isn't scarred. Are these a waste of time or of poor value?
I love my 4006 and want to try making larger holes. I just missed a 1076 they had in their shop last month.
For $350 and only minor wear, I'd say good deal. The rails should be riveted in place. Rumor is you can send them in to S&W and they will either fix the rail or remove the rail and install filler rivets. I say get one or both.
I have a 4553TSW that I bought as a police trade in and it had the rail removed and filler plugs installed. I think I prefer it that way as I don't plan on using a light on it, but I have heard that S&W will re-install the rail for a nominal fee if I wanted. I'm sure they could either remove or fix the rail on those. Price wise that is an ok price but if you factor the repair/shipping on it the deal is less appealing. Good guns though.
The 4566 is probably the most underpriced/underrated 45 out there. They are a great deal. I have 2.
