No market for Beretta 96's
With a new toy coming, I planned on peddling my Beretta 96 which was my first handgun. One of my favorite gun shops in the area said "No thanks" as I offered him $325. He said that he can sell 92's all day but 96's are a tough turnaround. Any thoughts on why this is? I'm curious.
Low capacity (11 rounds) full size gun. I had one and got rid of it.

After the ban, this killed the '96.
No idea I have one and love it.
Saw one in a local gun shop last week barell and slide needed to be refinished for $400.00
As far as low capicity comments go " A 1911 .45 holds 7-8 ?"
Not that many folks hanker for a large heavy .40 caliber pistol with what is considered by today's standards limited round capacity. Today, smaller lighter pistols hold upwards of 5 rounds MORE than the 96. With that being said, I have a 96 on layaway. But I am a Beretta fanatic.
I've got a couple of 92s but the 96 never appealed to me. My stable is mostly 9 mm and .45. Never was all that fond of .40 cal and sold the few I had.
Not only low round capacity but a considerably shorter life span as far as parts go. As far as .40s go they are decent at best but there are much better choices out there if you desire one. And keep in mind this is from a pretty big Beretta guy.
We have a used 90 Two in at the shop that's a .40. It's priced very well, and STILL is a PITA.
The 96 is a large gun, with a large grip, a moderate ammo capacity and no rail. These disadvantages in today's handgun market. That said, i think its a great gun but the 92 will outsell the 96 anyday since it is a close copy of the M9 as well as its widespread use in movies and tv
MecGar makes a 15 round mag for the 96. Just sayin'.
Put it on Gunbroker - guarantee somebody will pick it up at an OK price.
Well I will come in with the Arfcom answer and keep both. You can never have too many guns.
The .40 just isn't as popular as the 9mm. They cost almost twice as much to shoot. I probably wouldnt give much over $200 for a 96, then again I paid $275 for the last 92 I bought.

Man, in my locale, .40 is only marginally less popular than 9mm, ammo costs maybe $1-4 more per box of FMJ as compared to 9mm, and 92s just aren't seen for less than $450.
When did you get a 92 for $275?

Earlier this year, I think I paid $350 for my other one. Both are police trade ins with night sights. They show obvious wear but function perfectly.

Right here
A 96's frame life was/is considered right around 10,000 rounds. The 96A1 may have fixed this, but its still to early to tell.
If you want to sell it, simply swap the 96 upper for a 92/M9 upper with someone. Then you have a 92.

Decent gun but a highly competitve section of the market. It just never really caught on. Glock was cheaper with a simpler operating drill. Smith was, well, Smith. SIG had the high end covered. Just no where for the Beretta to fit in. Had limited success in the LE market.

.45acp > .40S&W eight days a week. Not to mention the traditional attraction of the 1911 (100+ years) versus the relatively new 92 series.
But yes,
no one wants to buy a full sized .40cal handgun that only holds 11-12rds.
From what I am seeing, .40 cal pistols in general are losing their appeal.
9mm and .45 acp still sell strong as do .380s.

do you use those mags spartan i am on my way to getting a 96a1 and would be interested in them if they are reliable thats 1 less than my xdm holds
I think the 92 series has better public relations than the 96. My first exposure to the 92 was watching Bruce Willis lay out a red carpet of woop pass in Die Hard and then a few years later I finally got rounds down range in the Marines. The 92 has service with the armed services and in the hands of John McClain to back it's play.
I've heard and seen 96's (using the faster 155 grain ammo) that cracked the frame and went through recoil springs like Barney Frank goes though a case of anal eze. I think those issues along with the size/weight issues mention earlier kind of soiled the M96's reputation in the LE and civilian market.
That said, Iove Berettas and have many enjoyable rounds down range with the M96. A heavier recoil spring goes a long way (both my 96's run Wolf 18 lb springs), especially with the 155. I just got my hands on 500 rounds of Federal 180 grain and I'm going to do some side by side tests with the 155 as time permits.
you can do as I did.
I bought a 92FS. A few weeks later, I bought a 96FS Combo slide. A few weeks after that, I bought the parts to run 357 Sig. Now I have options of 9mm, 40 s/w or 357 sig to run through my beretta.
As for round count. I used gunbroker to buy the 96fs slide and 357 parts. Mecgar makes a 13rd flush mag.
My beretta is more a house gun slash toy. I use a keltec pf9 for everyday carry.

The 40 hype has died off. It was very popular for some time and now it is just there. I see plenty of .40 Berettas out there for sale, especially LE trade ins. They just don't sell as fast as the 9s.

Bought 3 and will be getting more.

18 or 20 rounds capacity in the 92 series with Mec Gar mags = WIN
11 rounds of .40 in the 96 series = FAIL
Not to mention the .40 craze is dying off, along with the cheaper 9mm ammunition and the fact that the M9 is the current sidearm of the US Military sealed the 96's fate IMHO...
I've heard the reliability and parts life of the 96 is much less than the 92.

Reliabilty shouldn't be an issue, IMO. As long as one changes out the recoil spring in a proper manner, parts life shouldn't be one as well.
But capacity/size ratio is what is killing the 96, IMO.
