Turning a 10 round mag into a 15 round mag

Got a 10 round 92, PB marked, magazine with a pair of 15's as part of a recent gear trade.

Got to looking at the 10 rounder and wondering if I was going to smash it with a hammer when an idea hit me. What about cutting 'windows' into the sides where the 'ban-dimples' are and making it a 15 rounder. It's strictly a square range project, with big holes in either side it wouldn't be used for anything other than practice. Compared it to the 15's that were in the bag with it and I figured as long as I don't screw up the slots where it tapers from double column to single column, it should work. Might have to buy a new follower, but that's not a big deal as I'm upgrading my current mags with +10% springs.

Or should I just go back to original idea of smashing it with a hammer? It's not I'm all that concerned if it gets screwed up...

I doubt it will work.
The gun nazi's were pretty careful during the Clinton crime bill era to ensure stuff like what you want to wasn't possible.

Keep the mag it's better than nothing or sell it someone stuck where they can't have hi-caps.

Id try it and see. If not dont smash it... I mean Im sure there is someone in a ban state that will be willing to buy it and you can use that money for another 15 round mag.

If you do, do it remember to post pics! My local gunshop has a big box of 10's for cheap

Sell them online. Plenty of people still live in fascist states with 10 round limits.

selling online, would fund a couple 15 rders.

Still an interesting idea

Just leave it as a functioning 10rd mag and use it at the range or sell it.

The 3 folks who said 'go for it', I'm doing it. The sell/replace guys, why shouldn't I do this? There's all different types of 10 round mags, the Beretta is as close to the original as I've seen. They aren't cut short like some or dimpled like others and aren't 'filled' like Glock. ETA: I figure that so long as I don't cut higher than the narrowing notch, it should be fine.

Haven't broken out the rulers, but the size/shape are comparable.
Mecgar 18, Beretta 10, Beretta 15

Feed lips are slightly higher for the Mecgar, but look the same for the Beretta mags.

Followers are the same

Springs have the same number of coils, 10 rounder is slightly more compressed, but works in the 15 during a cycling function test. Likewise, the 15 round spring worked just fine in the 10 round mag.

The interior surfaces of each mag corresponds with the exterior finish. Unremarkable enough that I decided to not bother with trying to use my iphone to photograph down the tubes. I think I'm going to go ahead with this, just have to get access to a drill press and a couple of cutting bits.

I guess if it is fun, then do it. But with the price of 15 rounders at CDNN, it really isn't worth the time and work IMHO...

Hes just cutting out the dimples, I don't think that will be too much work.

Looking good so far! The mags look exactly the same, so I think there going to work.

Good luck

I would sell them and get more 15-rounders, but that's just my opinion. If you want to try it out, I'll be pleased to see the results....... or maybe not.

I tried it once, failed miserably.

I believe you will need to cut this pattern into the mag. This will keep the ramp effect that the bottom of the diamond shaped indention on the 15 round mag has on the rounds as they travel upward.

That's what I was thinking. I may start off squaring off the dimple near the base of the taper notch and then seeing how it goes from there. I'm actually thinking that I can do the finish work with swiss files after I drill out most of the dimples.

Thanks for illustrating the idea, I'm definitely keeping it!

I am guessing it was an epic fail?

I have a 10 rounder door stop that came with my Storm carbine, tried trading it but everyone that needs a 10 rounder lives in a ban state so they don't have a 15 rounder to trade, I'll try the cut recommended above with my dremel, although it's going to be tough to get an accurate cut. I may also try grinding that groove out from the inside.
