CCW question for Truckers /semi drivers
y0 my bro in law is a trucker and drives all around the country. He keeps getting conflicting reports on whats legal/illegal for carry. He understands reciprocity 'n all that jazz, and knows which states are off-limits for his ccw permit. However he was told about some Federal law that prohibits him from carrying anyway since he's a trucker. Any truth to that?
Any tips from fellow truck drivers wrt carrying beyond home state lines I can pass on to him?
When I was driving I carried everywhere i had reciprocity.

Roger that! I can't find this so-called Federal law that trumps that reciprocity stuff and makes it illegal for truckers to carry while on the road; i'm startin' to think its a bunch of hogwash.
I do Hotshot and carry.Had a Tennessee state patrol officer ask for CCW because he saw my Glock 19 in glovebox.Showed him my permit and he was fine with it but he was a gun nut like me!Other LEOs told me flat out not to carry if commercially driving.I guess if I shoot someone I will have to get some lime and a shovel!

California,New York, and New Jersey had me nervous driving through but I will NEVER return to their commie state or buy anything from there in protest of their abuse of power.

this is correct. no fed law. only from barstool lawyers.
there is no fed law that prohibits comercial drivers from carrying. I actually talked to a driver that had a LEO tell him that he would be safer if he carried.
Agreed there is no federal law, but who ever he hauls for may have an issue with it.
Roadgunner Podcast never mentioned it before, and I've been listening since the first episode.

Yo yo 'n' all dat.
There is no federal law on the matter. You have to follow the laws just like someone in a passenger vehicle would. Know the laws of each state and follow them.
There are many, many trucking companies that will tell you that to keep you from carrying on the job. Many of them prohibit it completely and it will cost you your job if they find out you are carrying. Worth it in my opinion.
hurrrrd that!
his boss is cool him carrying for safety cuz they lost a trucker to violence a couple years ago. dude was actually a good friend of my BIL.
they found the guys truck on the side of the road, and his body out in a pasture some ways away w/ a bullet in the back of the head.
thanks for the input folks!
There is no law prohibiting it. I have been DOT'ed several times in Ohio and they have never said a word about it when i tell them im armed and hand them my ccw license
Concealed is concealed.
Any place I cannot carry legally, I will not.
Federal law does allow for "safe passage" under the Federal Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986. It does not allow for CCW but it does allow you to have a handgun in your vehicle. For example if I can legally CCW in VA and I am driving to DE where I can also legally CCW, I can pass through DC where I legally could not have a handgun and MD where I could not legally carry CCW as long as the gn is unloaded and the gun and ammunition are carried so that they are not immediately accessible - locked in a case, or in a separate compartment from the driver.
The FOPA then allows short stops for food and gas in the pass through state, but would no allow any delays in the state.
Got this from askthetrucker.com The way I have interpreted it is when traveling and not having a chl. Have it locked in the sleeper with ammo separate from it.

FOPA.is all fine and dandy until you get busted in NJ,NY or CA.
And those three states are the reason I have yet to carry on a CMV. Although I refuse to go to CA. I do find my self in NJ. about twice a year which is too many for my taste.
