When carrying a 1911, which do you prefer ... ? (thumb safety question)

When carrying a 1911 (either CCW or open carry) do you prefer a single-sided thumb safety or an ambi ?

ETA: Feel free to comment on why your preference is what it is ...

I need an ambi... I'm left handed.

Other than the Kings pinned safety ambi safeties are inherently weaker than single sided.

Plus I'm very right handed.

I'm right handed, so single only. I can operate the safety with my left thumb though it's a little awkward, but I suppose no more awkward than shooting a pistol in my left hand anyway.

Right handed, single side only for me.

Nothing else on the gun is left hand friendly... I suppose once you are cocked n locked if you were left handed it would be the same draw as a righty.

The main reason I don't like them is all ambi safeties I have felt are rough on my trigger finger. Either the bar or the safety ledge itself rubs my trigger finger and I just don't like it. The other reason is the look, have never cared for the look of an ambi safety.

This.

I was experiencing a problem with my Desert Warrior's thumb safety getting pushed off, during the workday.

I was/am carrying it in the same DeSantis Scorpion IWB that I use for my New Agent, which never had its thumb safety getting pushed off.

I standardized the Desert Warrior to having the same Colt WW1 style thumb safety that came on the New Agent

I went to ambidextrous extended thumb safeties on my 1911 back in 1982 or 83 after I missed the safety at the range one day. Missing that factory safety on the range is a "WTH" moment followed by a small bit of embarrassment. Missing it on the street would be much more serious.

That first set worked so good I just kept putting them on the 1911's I bought after that. The only one I don't have with them is the 1911 made in 1917 (but then I don't carry it).

How is an ambi thumb safety on a 1911 rubbing on your trigger finger?

Single sided when CCW'ing.

I like ambi's but for some reason I keep breaking them. I now have single sided ones on my guns for the most part.

both have pros and cons. with a single safety there is less chance for something to catch on it and flip it off. single saftys are stronger too. but what if you cant use your right hand, say you have been shot, or you are holding a child. that ambi safety would be nice. Go do drills with your support hand and try to disengage the single sided safety, its weird but doable. it should be practiced if your gona carry a gun with a single safety.

Single sided for me. I do not see the advantage of a ambi safety when I need my strong hand to take it from the holster. Once removed, the safety will be off and won't be reapplied if my strong arm is hurt.

If... my strong hand is hurt prior to removal from holster, not having an ambi safety will be the least of my worries.

I have one of each, don't prefer enough either way to change either one of them. A 1911 with the safety off in a holster isnt going to go off.

This. However, I don't think I'd have one if I was right handed.

I voted ambi only because I am left handed.

Maybe it's the super high grip I get on handguns or something... there is usually a bar coming off the safety lever on the ejection port side if the gun has an ambi safety and that little bar rubs against the rear of my trigger finger/hand when shooting or manipulating the safety. Same thing happens to me on ambi safety AR15's the extra safety lever rubs my hand and is distracting to me when shooting. I have learned how to use the safety with my left hand if need be on my 1911's or AR but I don't see myself ever needing to.

Other than shooting weak hand in a required match stage I have never needed to use an ambi and perfer a single side they are also more durable.

Ambi. I'm left handed and my wife is right. The 1911 sits in a nook in the center of the headboard of our bed or between the seats of the car/truck. Whoever grabs it first can flip the safety without having to think about which side it is on.

I had an ambi. When IWB carrying, my elbow would unsafe my gun.

I don't have an ambi anymore.

Working a single sides safety with my left hand is MUCH easier than drawing from my holster left handed. (Try it)

Ambi for me, I'm left handed and have never had an issue with one...

I tend to agree but everything on my rig has been dehorned by a very competent smith. He does most if not all the LEO's in the area for 1911. He's a certified Colt smith from their custom shop.

Single is nice. But if your stronghand is out of service, operating the single may be an issue.

Single.
I have "bumped" one off an an ambi once. Thought I heard a little click. A few minutes later it dawned on me what it might have been, sure enough.
