 Tommy Theis vs. Galco KingTuk

Anyone want to post some pics of yours? Tell me what you like/dislike.

I'm not interested in Crossbreed.

The holster will carry my Kahr CW9. I finally decided to give the Kydex/Leather combo a try since the Kahr is so thin and easy to conceal, why make it bulky by adding more leather?

From everything that I have read, they're both top notch quality holsters. Price is apparently negligible, give or take a few dollars.
Thinner Horsehide vs. thicker Cowhide & Goat/Lamb/Sheep* combination. (*Which animal was used is unspecified on the Galco site, only referring to it as "Napa" leather)

From Wikipedia: Napa leather, "noted for softness and durability. It is often used in high-quality leather products"

Theis will let me wear it for two weeks and if I don't like it, I can return it.
Galco will only let me return it if unused and within ten days.

I'm stuck in a bind, unsure of which road to take.

I own both. The fit and finish of the Galco is better. The horsehide Theis holster has thinner leather than the Galco: however I don't think the modest difference in thickness is much of something to be concerned with. Both offer the exactly the same functionality from my perspective. In the end, I would recommend the Theis as doing business with a small one man shop who works extremely hard at customer service is the right thing to do in my view.

I can only speak for the galco but the quality is great. Feels very comfortable and you can usually get it locally without a wait which is a plus. The only thing I would change is the thickness of the leather. It's two pieces sewn together so its pretty jock and somewhat limits the flexing of it when you sit or bend over. Otherwise I love it.

I like my galco the only issue I have with it is the retention. It is kind of difficult to draw at times but I have been told that that can be fixed, someone actually suggested a hairdryer to the Kydex. I will post a pic when I get a chance.

Funny how you say you're not interested in the Crossbreed when the Tommy Theis is nothing more than a knockoff of it

I'm not interested in wearing a religious symbol. Hence the italic "Cross" portion within my OP.

I'm not either, which is why I replaced the CB clips on mine with kydex ones.

Same opinion here...with Comp-Tac and Theis. I'm still wearing the Theis. Great customer service.

King Tuck is nice, the leather backing is very comfortable. I have one for my full size 1911 and it does help spread out the weight very well compared to the BladeTech I was wearing but the slide will eat through pants because so much is exposed and it holds the gun so tight in one spot, it can't hardly move which is a good thing but I like to have a little wiggle room when sitting. I have also had the front sight hang up on me when practicing my draw which kind of scared me, havn't tried the hair dryer method yet. I still like the King Tuck, but I may have to make some changes. From what I hear the Theis holsters cover up the front of the gun better and being that you want one for a smaller gun, I don't think you will have much problem with pants shreading.

I say go with the Theis first and if you don't like it, return it and go get a Galco...

I felt the Theis was too wide, made it feel awkward on me and bunched up in the middle. Helluva nice guy though.

I have a King Tuck for my J-Frame and it nearly took 3 hands to pull the revolver. One to hold my pants down, one to hold the holster down and one to draw. It had very tight retention. I used a hairdryer and glove to press out the trigger guard portion of the kydex and now it draws nice and smooth. I also replaced the Galco clips with Comp-Tac clips so it now can tuck in virtually any shirt.

Glove?? I heard hairdryer and leave the gun in (empty of course) to stretch but why do you say glove.

I used a firefighting glove to slowly press out the trigger guard indent while holding the hairdryer with the other hand.

Does anyone know if the standard steel clips on the Theis will fit a 1.5 x 1/4" thick belt? I had a holster with a similar clip that didn't fit the quarter inch thick belt and the clip flexed out away from the belt, leaving it unsecured. If it will work with my belt I'll give him a shot, and if it doesn't work out I'll return it and try the Galco. Galco is out of stock right now anyway, until the 14th of October.

Like someone mentioned in this thread, I did some more reading and found a fair number of people having their pistols front sight snag on the KingTuk holster along with a very tight fit. Some people have said that wearing the holster for a while will break it in enough to ease the fit to the pistol, which is fine by me, but if that didn't work for me I would hate to ruin it by trying to reform it.

I've read a number of post on here about the kydex clips snapping, and that was from Comptac if I remember correctly. That is one reason I would prefer spring steel clips, and if it were not for the cross stamped into the leather and clips, I would buy one for sure.

I have a Beltman 1.5" horsehide belt (about 1/4") thick. The TT holster with standard steel clips fits fine.

In my previous post 'TT' was intended to imply the Tommy Theis holster. I see now there is a TT Gunleather out there as well. Jeez there sure is a lot of holster makers...

I've been carrying an MTAC with the kydex clips for over 3 years, and also a CB with kydex clips for a while now, and have never had a problem with the kydex clips. If one does eventually break, it's simple and cheap enough to replace. On the contrary, I have heard numerous reports of the steel clips bending out of shape, tearing up nice leather belts, car seats, etc.

Hmm, good point. I'll see how well these metal clips pan out, and possibly consider replacing them at some point with kydex. If I do that, I will be sure to have a few extra on hand in the event one breaks.

Above is a link to a review I did of a Theis Holster. I have several of his holsters now. I got one for my wife and her CCW, which is a CW9. If you want to try one, I have an extra for a Glock. It's actually for sale in the EE. But if you would like to try one I will send it to you. You can use the Glock one for a CW9. I am sitting here with my wifes CW9 in mine now. The CW9 and the Glock have similar dimensions around the trigger guard except for the obvious thickness. But it's an IWB. When you tighten it up on your belt, the leather backing is going to be pushed into the kydex and tighten it up.

I would let you borrow hers, but it's left handed, and she would kill me if I shipped it to someone else.

Nevermind, just saw where you had posted later and already order a Theis. I think you will love it. I much prefer his metal clips. He actually sent me some of his kydex clips to try out. I liked the metal much better. My belt caused the kydex clips to push out, so the clip was not really clamping around the belt, just sitting on it. If you get one of his and think you want to try the kydex, let me know. I will send you the ones he sent me.
