Piston Rod Slams Into the Bolt Carrier Key
I'm looking at Barrett REC7 and they tell me that the piston rod slams into the bolt carrier key for every cycle. Is this how the AK-47 operates and if so what is the life of the mentioned parts?
Thanks

There is no bolt carrier key on an AK.
Is someone trying to convince you to not buy it and buy something else?
There is a thing that replaces the carrier key designed for the piston to push against. Not sure what it is called
At the start of the cycle the piston is touching or nearly touching so it is more like a shove than a slam.
At any rate that part of the operation has been proven (AK and all that)

I like that wording, "a shove" instead of a slam. I'm just trying to narrow down my search for a hi reliable AR system and I don't think it's going to be a piston based on the AK-47 reliability. I wasn't sure if the AK had a carrier or not but thanks for clearing that up.

No, not at all. No one is trying to convince me of anything. I'm one of those serious homework doers. Thanks for clearing up the bolt carrier question for me. Now I can start to understand why the AK has been so reliable. No slamming or tilting of the carrier.
Thanks
*Most* of the piston ARs use a short stroke design....which means there's an op rod and a place on the carrier where the op rod strikes it to get it moving. All of the piston AR systems have been redesigned to deal with this impact. Longevity of these parts at this stage in piston AR development is not really something to worry about since almost all mfgs have started using one piece carriers instead of a modified/strengthened gas key in a standard carrier.
The AK is a long stroke system. The carrier and op rod/piston are all one piece (after being pinned and/or welded as such). The move in one fluid motion and the recoil spring assembly is inline with the piston so there's no 'carrier' tilting of the action like you find in all piston ARs. That is a problem that has been addressed (but not eliminated) in the piston AR by moving the strike point back on the carrier, and enlarging a boss at the back of the carrier so that as the carrier moves into the buffer tube, it doesn't have much slop between the carrier and the tube.....people have even made aftermarket buffers that have a 'tit' on them to mate to the hole in the carrier to help stop carrier tilt.
I've owned 3 piston ARs....POF and LWRC...none of them exhibited much in the way of buffer tube wear that didn't stop after the first few hundred rounds.
If you're looking for an inline recoil system....the SCAR, ACR or XCR are probably safer bets and IMO, the XCR is the most robust design of the bunch....definitely the most AK like. I have 3 of those....if you get one that runs, they are excellent.

An SKS gas system is more alike to the AR piston systems than AR to AK. SKS's are pretty damn reliable as well. As always YMMV
the SIG-556 is also another design you could check out
Dont forget the PWS MK114...which is also based off the legendary AK long stroke design.
I like the RobArms XCR but I hate the push button setup on the rear locking mechanism. If you accidentally bump it the upper will pop off the lower right when you dont want it to. I wish they used a traditional push pin like the AR has. Other than that one issue, I like the XCR alot. because of that I vote for the PWS MK114 over a SCAR (dont like reciprocating charging handles) or ACR (too many dealbreakers to list right now).

That Barrett is a piston operated rifle - But it is NOT a Kalashnikov action in many ways.
You can't really compare the two on a functional basis.
