Future of SBR's ?

Got to talking with some guys abour SBRing a Draco and it was brought up that if down the road the laws change that SBR's could be easily confiscated and/or destroyed . I brought up the point of grandfathered clause and it was said there is no garentees with laws and law makers. He made a good point anything is possible and banning SBR's would be an easy sell to the public. Any thoughts on the topic ?

I think that you are thinking too much... if that was the case all MG would have been destroyed back in 86.... get your SBR and enjoy it...

Your friend is right. Regardless of people poking fun at chicken little arguments....the truth is, ATF rules by diktat. NFA items like SBRs have a MUCH smaller following than FUDD guns and the NRA is generally very disinterested in protecting SBRs, MGs, Suppressors, AOW's, etc. NFA is not widely known, understood or supported by the public or elected officials.

If there was a new law (given, that is CURRENTLY very unlikely) that required you to turn in your NFA items for a government tax voucher.....most people will not fight to the death to keep them....they'll turn them in.

You can choose to believe in government benevolence as nothing really bad has ever happened in this country....but we also have never been in a sovereign debt crisis of this magnitude either. It's very hard to say what is coming.

I'd say make your own decision. Me, I don't trust my government as far as I can throw it and I certainly don't trust protection under the rule of law since it has largely been replaced by the rule of men.

Yeahhhhhhh if you can SBR or AOW or SBS or whatever legally, just do it and enjoy your freedoms! If by some very strange chance the powers that be want to take them away; WE as a firearms community will face it TOGETHER. But until that happens, which I for one think it wont, live it up and have fun! Just my $.02

SBR's and AOW's aren't really on the anti's radar.

Most, maybe even all, that turn up in crimes were illegally modified to begin with. And with legal handguns out there in droves, I'm not sure they even care, if they're even really that aware of them as something "special" to go after, unlike the MG's who's full-auto function is viscerally obvious to most.

Also, the SBR, AOW, and SBS categories in the NFA arguably exist MORE because of the original drafts of the NFA made all handguns NFA items as well, and the drafters didn't want people cutting down the remaining non-NFA shotguns and rifles into handgun replacements.

When it was realized making handguns NFA would get the bill killed with no chance of passing, it was dropped, but the SBR, SBS, and AOW classifications stayed, partly out of oversight, and possibly because they did show up in the arsenals of bootlegers and the Bonnie & Clyde types of the day on a relatively regular basis.

As long as people are content they let things slip away one chess move at a time. A missguided bill becomes law/ prohibitation at a time. In the name of your "safety" A few inocent people die at the hands of a criminal or a mentaly unstable. We talk about how terrible it is/was. All valid and true points. Then were look for answers and how we could avoid such a travisty from ever happining ever again. One states lets throw all the guns in the bottom of the sea. Only the GOVERMENT can keep us safe/posses guns. However we cannot control / ensure your or my safety any where or any given point and or time. Someone will have a gun, be it a non law abiding person or bad ruler. Just remember Your beleve that it is not a valid law to ban firearms from the people due to the constitutional rights. When that day comes. The nonbelivers will be criminals in the eyes of the law. Bullets will be passing though bodys long after every citizen on the planet is made into a pesant. This is the natural law of goverment progression is "CIVALIZATION" Its only a matter of when. TIME! So assume it will never happen and when the wrongs of others are assumed and presumed onto you. One step is moved twords a false safety a punishment is imposed on us as a whole.

Look at the world history. How registration in every case has lead to confuscation in every instance it was imposed in the name of accountability and safety. There was a interesting video about the history of other countrys cofuscation and how they lost thier gun rights through registration, and what world country leaders did in that era. I saved the link however it expired. Anyone have a new link to this or a copy they could post. It was posted here on ARF about 2 years ago? It showed Germany, Britian, and Austrailia to name the most well known. It discused the plans of leaders domination over people with the control of food. Lots of insight of removing the powers of the people. Our constitution was based on the basic rights and the rights to protect them. However fear wants to amend our rights. So do not worry. We just need to know where all the guns are as a step to ensure your safety. Our future depends on it!

I have plans for a couple of SBR's this year.
The more people that own these the more voices we have when the antis start their nutty crusades.

The "ANTI'S" are not looking to take your sbr's.... They are looking to take all your guns.

I was young, but I remember all the hub bub in 85 about guys not wanting to register their FA gun. Fast forward 25 years and now the guys that didnt

register them have a worthless piece of steal that will get them ten years in prison. I dont trust the ATF but I truly doubt they will come door to door collecting our toys.

IF it ever came to the point of the government seizing all SBRs, they would be seizing all guns, too. So, your pistol Draco would be gone, too. So, pay the $200.00 and have fun with your SBR while you can. If anything, I suspect a law change would prevent future SBRs from being made.

Well let's see......................................NFA laws have not changed one bit since 1934..............................................you worry about a potential ban and I will keep enjoying the items attached to the 13 tax stamps I have so far.

That is indeed a frightening and possible scenario. Governments do incredible things to stay in power. In 1933 Presdident Roosevelt made it illegal to own gold punishable by ten years in prison. Never underestimate the lengths a desparate government will go to in order to save itself.
