Which is the better shooting rifle and why?

I haven't shot a Yugo, but I'll jump in and say the current Romy AES-10's are getting rave reviews. I have one, VERY smooth, straight and well put together. Accurate (rested 2-3" groups @ 100yards), and by all appearances: Better quality than usually associated with the Romanian guns.

Either rifle will serve the purpose, mostly comes down to individual preference. I prefer Yugos and went with the M72. I wouldn't mind the Romy either.

The folding stock is what concerns me with the Romanian. Are you able to get a checkweld at all?

Would it be easy to change out to a fixed wooden stock? Or would I need to mess with rivets and such?

The Romanian folder installs and uninstalls EXACTLY like any other fixed stock. Two screws and you can put on whatever the hell AK fixed stock you want on there.

not to worry when shooting the aes-10b with the wire stock if your shooting irons, but when using a scope then it becomes awkward with the wire stock.

How much are the Yugo and Romy RPKs selling for now?
What, if anything, is better or worse about them than the Chinese NHM91?

Both are selling on Atlantic Firearms for $699 each, so the only thing left is personal preference.

Accuracy is the same for both of these? 2" is really good for a 7.62 AK at 100 yards

Use one of these for the wire stocks. They work great.

Is the cheek weld pretty substantial on those? Still thinking about getting one as opposed to a fixed stock.

Sorry for the late reply, kinda forgot

I don't have "THAT" cheek piece, but I welded on a riser to my romy stock (Not my RPK stock, but identical design), with the same profile. Very good, and matches the cheek weld of a normal AK stock.

i prefer the romy bc it will have a new hammer forged chrome lined machine gun barrel. yugos arent chrome lined and depending on where yours was built it may even have a US made barrel.

the AES-10b's are matching RPKS demils, rebuilt on real romanian receivers in the same factory that built the original machine guns before they were demilled..
id say thats about as close as one can get to the real thing..
and on the folding stock.. the AES-10b has the push button style wire folder not the lever style. the difference is that the push button style has the wire offset to the left rather than centerline of the rifle. this allows for a much more comfortable cheek weld and works well with a scope as well(for a right hander, lefties for get it)..
that said, i replaced mine with a solid stock because it felt unbalanced with the folder due to the heavy barrel and extra weight up front from the bipod. it feels more balanced to me with the extra weight of the solid stock

I just can't let my wire folder go its too evil looking.
On another note, all your points are valid. It's the closest thing to an original. I added some East German night sights, a drum mag with pouch, refinished the receiver and the wood. The action is like butter. Well worth it.

I love my AES10B. It is second in smoothness only to my M70AB2. However with that being said I also want to pick up an M72 just to have 1 of each.

It's not a bad cheek weld at all, like you pointed out. I had a 4x32 scope on mine for a while and had no problem with eye relief or comfort(I did add paracord, though). Perfect rifle to dump some mags with all day long.

Are these parts interchangeable with the Apex parts kits––might be cheap (relatively) way to get to take advantage of both stocks, plus have some spare parts if they work.

Original kit Yugo RPK's are built like a tank. The newer Yugo's have an American barrel which is a negative to me as a collector.

Romanians are entry level AK's. Nothing wrong with them if you got a good build. But, there is a distinct difference in quality in the Yugo variants.

Somewhat. I don't have parts kits to work with on the RPK, but I ordered one of their lower hand guards. It took some work to get it to sit properly and fit.
