M72 RPK stocks - can they be changed?

OK, I missed out on the RPKs they had at AIM surplus, so I am looking harder now and they have some (I think) at Centerfire systems.

RPK

Anyway, the ones they have and about all the other ones I can find have that side folding stock which I don't want. Can a regular wooden rear stock be put in the gun afterward or is that sidefolder destined to always be a sidefolder?

Help and thanks,

Indy

That's a Romy AES-10B, not a M72. Still a good, solid rifle.

Numerous pics of AES-10Bs with wood clubfoot stocks in the RPK pic thread stickied at the top of the forum.

Way overpriced imo. At least it has the thicker reciever and barrel unlike the Romanian " RPK" I used to own

OK, I found a fixed stock Century RPK and I think I am going to get one real soon. They are the fixed stock variety so I don't have to worry about converting it over. I hear lots of love towards the RPKs out there, but the occasional (or more than occasional) hate for Century builds.

Anyway, after reading up a little on here and the picture thread I have a question. (Forgive me, kinda new to the AK/RPK thing) but what is the difference between the RPK and AES-10B? What is the Century Built rifle, RPK or AES-10B? I'm soooo confused!

Thanks for the help.

AES10-B was built in Romania. Its a great rpk type gun w a heavy barrell and heavier front trunnion/bulged reciever. The bi pod on mine was not correct, so I replaced it. On the Romania AES10-B, you can take the rear wood stock off and replace it with a sidefolder pretty easily.

OK, now I am only slightly less confused. I know the AK and it's variants are about as prolific as the Mausers and it's variants. I have a Century built Yugo M70AB2 and it is one heavy ass AK. It also has the bulged front receiver (with heavier front trunion?). Do they both have the same front trunion? I didn't look at the RPK yesterday that closely, I meant to but forgot to check out the receiver a little closer but they were closing up the store when I got there. The RPK that I was looking at was a century built RPK (Yugo M72). SInce I have a Yugo M70 I figured I need a Yugo M72 to keep it company I just want the best gun for my increasingly harder to come by money.

Not to be getting off of my own subject too much but what the heck is a PSL? It looks like an AK, but isn't quite a Drugonov, what is it? Are they worth looking at? Do they have any magazines over 10 rounds for it? There is soooooo much to learn about the AKs and the many variants. So confusing at times.

Thanks guys,

Indy

Most of the Yugo AKs have the bulged trunnion like the RPK, and yes the Yugo M72 has the bulged trunnion.
Can't say about the Century builds, I built mine, but it seems Century has gotten better with quality control in the past few years.

A PSL/Romak3 is just a cheaper way of making a Dragunov style rifle. No there's no mags over 10 round unless you make your own.

A PSL is basically a big ass AK using the 7.62x54R round. It is not at all functionally like a Dragunov. It works just like an AK-47. 2 totally different firearms and 2 very different costs.

Here are a few pics of mine. PSL-54C, Romanian RPK AES-10B, Yugo M70AB2 and a Romanian Draco. Bottom pic is a Yugo M-72.

Nice collection!

Now on you Romanian AES-10B it has a carry handle, can those be added to the Yugo M72's? Were they originally made with carry handles but just didn't get added back on when century rebuilt them? Did you build your M72 or is that a century built gun?

Thanks,

Indy

M72s never had carry handles.

I like what you did with the wood on that M-72. What kind of finish is that? I need to get that done on mine.

Yea, the carry handles were never on the M-72's. Alot of the Century Romy builds don't have the carry handles attached very well. I got lucky with mine. I guess you could tack weld one on a M-72 but it wouldn't look right or be historically accurate.

My M-72 is a Century build. When I got it the bipod was worn out. The feet dangled about 2 inches below the handguards. Had to remove the FSB and buy a new bipod from Rguns. Put it back together and refinished the wood.

Wood was stripped down and I used minwax sedona red stain on it. Went back with 4-5 coats of Cabots spar satin varnish. Turned out pretty good.

Another note on the Romanian RPK's, they come with the wrong bipod on them. PKM bipod is what Century puts on them. They are too short. I replaced mine with the correct bipod.

Here is a pic of the wrong bipod before I changed it. Notice how much shorter it is. You need the taller one for running 40 round RPK mags.

Sweet looking collection! Maybe someday... Thanks for all the info and input guys. Did you get the correct bi-pod at R-guns as well? I need to look into that. I need to get a RPK first though.

Got the replacement M-72 bipod from Rguns for $50 + shipping. Got the correct Romy bipod from Military Gun Supply for $25 + shipping.

Hijack Alert

Is the Yugo RPK's US made barrel a deal breaker for you guys?

I cant decide between the Yugo or Romanian. I guess of just Leary of the US made non-chromed barrel. I

The US barrels are Green Mountain and very good quality. I have not had any accuracy issues with it and as long as you clean it after corrosive, you shouldn't have a problem. These do not suffer the same issues as the Century Tantals of keyholing fame. It was not a deal breaker for me at all. Just like chrome lined in AR barrels is not a deal breaker for me either. I would prefer it, but not absolutely necessary.

I bought the Romy first because that was the one I had a chance at, at the time. The Yugos had not shown up yet in any numbers. Got the Yugo later. I really like both. Especially sitting side by side with 75 round drums in them.

Agreed. Besides, the original barrels weren't chrome lined, so the fact that the replacement barrel isn't chrome is a non-issue for me. Good barrels.
