Compare and Contrast RPK's: Yugo/AES10B
This is where we dialog what we like and don't like.
I have an AES10B, (just ordered a Yugo).
I like: *The club foot stock.
*Wood grain and figure (except on the upper HG).
*Carry handle.
*how it looks.
*How it shoots--great.
I don't like:*the finish that came off the bipod when I used carb cleaner to clean it.
*Non-adjustable rear sight (didn't they all have those originally)?
*The fact that I will now, most likely, have to buy another stupidly expensive drum (or two) for it...and some more 40's!

I have a Yugo M72.
I like: Everything.
I dislike: Nothing.
To me the M72 embodies everything a RPK should be. Century did an outstanding job of building mine, above and beyond what I would expect from them. My favorite rifle thus far.

Seems like a lot of the earlier ones came with laminate furniture and RPK rear sights(windage adjustable).
Unfortunately mine came with neither.
So far I have:
Refinished the wood...three coats of cherry gel stain, two coats of semi-gloss poly.
Cut the tack weld on the muzzle nut and replaced it with a US version.
Popped the FSB off and replaced the PKM bipod with a proper Romanian RPK bipod(the PKM bipod was too short).
Trimmed a smooth chinese topcover to clear the bulged Trunion and fit.
Ditched the carry handle. It seems to ALWAYS be right in the way when I go to grab the forend. Looks cool but irritates the hell out of me.
For me to be happy I need to:
Install a G2
Order laminate Russian Furniture
Get my adjustable rear sight
Duracoat.
So far it's been plenty accurate for 1-200 yard plinking. Mostly bouncing sniper cubes around. Everything is nice and straight....no cant issues. I'm at right around 1k rounds with zero malfunctions.
Very little mag wobble. I did need to file back the selector stop a little to get Bulgy waffle 40 rounders to lock in properly.
For the money I think they're an incredible deal.
I don't have a yugo yet but I'm a sucker for the finned barrel. May have to grab one before November.
LIKE
-clubfoot is comfy to shoot.
-laminated furniture(i actually like the fact there was no finish because it saved me from having to stip it)
-its big and mean-like me!
-shoots great for a $400 rifle.
-chromelined barrel
-adjustable rear sight
DON'T LIKE
-swapping the bipod(it was easy to do but i wish it came with the right one)
-having to buy a drum(espicially since i used to have one and sold it before the price skyrocketed)
-the carry handle.i took it of and dremel'd off the loop the day i got it.
i replaced the fcg with a g2 before i even had it to the range.if the fcg that was in was ANYTHING like the century i had in my nds3 build, its a definate improvement.i like my MiSFiTs stockset but i have a russian one coming in from a friend.other then that, this gun is the shit.i liked the finned barrel on the yugo, but heard only so-so reports about the us made barrels.if i had the cash to buy another rpk,i think i'd get another aes10b and leave the handle and install a romy sidefolder stock
My new Yugo RPK:
Fired 100 rounds, both left and right side from a bipod, standing.
LIKE: * Pretty accurate and smooth.
* TAPCO trigger group--I love these triggers.
* Very nicely fit and finish. No sight cant.
* New barrel with the cooling fins
* Correct Bi-pod.
* Every mag I have, from bulgy waffle 10's to the bulgy bullet mag 40 rounder it
came with, fit pefectly. Having mostly WASR's this is quite a pleasant difference.
* Rubber butt pad.
* Windage adjustable rear sight.
DISLIKE: * Cheesey CAA looking pistol grip.
* Shooting it. There was no possible way to shoot this gun with out stock slap. My
cheek still hurts.
* Sights. These are the most awful things ever put on a rifle. I was unable to line up
the tiny, shallow rear notch with the front post--unlesss I started at the 3 setting.
It did work well for the 25 meter zero, however. Not sure if it was the stock/sight
design, or if I have to get bug-eye glasses to replace my designer frames
* The rifle barrel was finished after the bi pod was a ssembled, because when you
cant the bi pod, there is a shiny, stainless steel looking bare spot on the barrel
that did not get finished. "It sure do shine".
* "in the white" bolt carrier and handle. Mine had minor surface rust in the bolt
carrier from the distributor. This is stupid on a militay arm.
* No numbers in the butt stock...

* No ability to mount optics like on my AES10B.
* I was getting some powder residue; it was worse when shooting lefty (face in front of the action). Originally I called it "gas blow by", which is the incorrect term--sorry.
This is my second Yugo, and while above average in fit and finish, I have now confirmed that I hate them. This rifle is up on the EE.
Just different strokes for different folks. Everyone who likes them, I am really very happy for you. They just aren't for me.
However, if it was my only AK, I am sure I would learn to love it!

I have the aes10 and the aes10b and also the yugo m72 and the yugo is by far my favorite better all around quality and I don't have any of the problems such as stock slap or trigger slap and my sights on all of my rpks are adjustable. Maybe I bought mine at the right time when they were made out of better kits, I don't know but I got three good ones.

My AES also has the G2 trigger. I bought it in May of this year from Classic arms.
The stock on the Yugo just seems shaped wrong for me, I really think it is related to having to wear corrective lenses. I tried everything I read here: face forward, face back, cheek high, cheek low, stock squished hard into face.
I still consider mine to be a good one (even with the powder residue that I was getting thrown back at me).
My Yugo looks like everyone else's. Anyone else get a bit of powder residue blown back at them? Wolf and GT ammo?
VTDefender:
I ordered an AES10B recently but learned (after I ordered it) that it doesn't have the carrying handle for some reason. It appears that you don't like yours. If you're interested in selling the carrying handle with (I think it's an E clip) to hold it on, please let me know. Thanks!!!

Had issues with the stock slap as well.
It took two range sessions to figure out what worked , at least in my case. I had to put my cheek directly behind the receiver in the neck area of the stock . Shooting it while laying on the ground I tried this technique and laying 30-40 degrees angled from the weapon.
Used the same cheek weld directly behind the receiver technique while shooting it off the bench with the bipod folded. Worked like a charm. No stock slap and had a good sight picture.
I did not try that close to the receiver; I did think about it though...kind of like a nose to the charging handle AR weld?
you're not alone. i really dislike the yugo's as well.
great guns. but teh stock geometery makes them so uncomfortable to actually shoot.
have both the m72(and a fixed regular ak) and romy version.
i preffer teh aes10b a great deal more, just don't shoot it much...to easy to burn through too much ammo.
I like my AES-10B, I guess.
However, the barrel material is not good steel. I wasn't being careful enough when removing the handguard, and the handguard's steel stamping scratched the barrel...
It is, however, an accurate rifle.
Hehe, whenver I think of it, I smell that cosmoline stench :)

I couldnt decide....
I built a Yugo RPK and love it.
5 weeks ago I put AES10B on layaway for $450 (Mil discount)
