I am not really an AK guy (sure you get tired of hearing that) but my brother wants to pick up an AK during a Black Friday sale and asked for my help in selecting one. The different models offered are an AMD-65 paratrooper model at 459, a WASR with a "single stack mag" at 279, and a WASR 10 double stack. I believe they are all century imports.

When I was in the store before I found the gun counter staff to be very unknowledgeble so I could not count on them being able to answer hios questions. When I was in the store last I looked at a couple and the fit and finish seamed good to me be I don't know AKs to form a good opinion.

Do these rifles use standard AK mags or do they take some expensive varient mags?
What are things I look for on the rifle before he purchases, I know to check for mag wobble and a canted forward site but that is about it?
Should he be leary of any countries of origin?

Anthing else I should know to look for?

Thanks in advance for any advice you guys can give.

The AMD and double stack WASR take standard magazines. The single stack WASR only accepts a special magazine which holds 10 cartridges. It can be converted to accept standard magazines.
The AMD may be a "kit gun" which was assembled in the US on a US receiver with a US barrel.
The WASRs are built in Romania.
I recommend you check Century's website to be sure about the AMD.

I put a AMD-65 on order. It's the one I want to own.

My brother went with the WASR 10 that takes standard mags. It shots pretty well, I was actually very surprised with how nice the trigger was. It came with 2 TAPCO mags that do have feed issues, I need to find him some decent mags now.

Thanks for you help.

Centerfire Systems usually has combloc mags for reasonable money. APEX and AIM also are good sources for proper AK mags. CFS is in KY, so you'd have to pay sales tax on anything you buy from them, but shipping is very reasonable. AIM is in OH, just north of Cincy and I've bought from them many times for cheap shipping and no tax. APEX is in CO and shipping can be a bit more, but never any tax and they are all reputuble places I'm happy to do business with.

You can also come across some reasonable deals from Cheaper Than Dirt and Sportsman's Guide, but you got to watch the fine print.
