7.62x39? I know its dirty, underpowered, and not as accurate as domestic ammo, but it is CHEAP. Ive read some reviews of Wolf ammo in AK 47's and people say they love it. I know as someone else on this forum that the Galil is an AK47 that went to charm school, but I personally dont know how much alike they are.

I do know that I have an AR10, and an MSAR556 that I have shot over 2k rounds of Wolf and counting with not one problem {the AR10 had some problem with a few reloads, not Wolf though}. Since Im fortunate to have a few rifles now in my later life I like to shoot them all, but I cant afford the $35 per 20 rounds at this point. However, if the Galil has problems with FTE, FTF, etc then I want to know BEFORE I buy 2k rounds of the stuff.........thanks in advance.

I have since looked at a few reviews on the Ak 47's with Wolf, and most all of them are very favorable.

I think one thing that should make the Wolf ammo run so good in a Galil 7.62x39 vs a 5.56 is the very way the casing of the 7.62x39 is tapered vs the 5.56 having no taper in the casing.

If you think about it the bolt on any semi 7.62x39 doesnt have to move more than a fraction of a mm for the whole case to clear the chamber. Where as on the 5.56mm the bolt has to travel the length of the case for the case to clear, which might be the reason for so many neg results with AR15 type rifles.

I know I have a MSAR that has 2k round of Wolf with no problems what so ever. I do mix a brass case in every 4th round just to clean the gunk that seem to form in the chamber from the Wolf.

I think since Im bringing it up one should clean the firearm completely after shooting Wolf. Anyways, that is just my little theory.

I have run a buncha soviet bloc ammo thru my galil.

monarch (prvi partisan serbia) fmj and soft point (academy sports and non magnetic)
remington unc fmj walmart
federal fmj wal mart
wolf soft point (military classic) hollow point and fmj
and some others barnaul hollow point boat tail

all have run well except for wolf black box hollow point which after 30+ rounds or so the empty casing gets stuck in the chamber and i have to pull out cleaning rod to knock out. i immediately switch to another wolf (classic soft point) or barnaul and it continues to fire with no problems at all. I have read of other problems just like that. with exact same ammo... something flaky...

I run wolf in my golani parts abortion with no problems and unbelievable accuracy! I"m getting consistent 3.5 inch groups at 200yds. It beats many AR's in practical rifle competitions as well. I'm very impressed with the performance of the polymer coated ammo. Very few FTF's Dan

Sounds like it's a popular build right now. I'm currently on Jeff's list too - for a 7.62x39 Micro.

On the topic of the reliability of Wolf ammo, it's been my understanding that the "reliability" issues seem tied more to a mixing of brass and steel ammo in the same range session. Apparently the steel casings do not expand into the chamber to the degree the brass does, so some fouling tends to bleed abound the case mouth into the chamber. After a somewhat extended session with steel - when a brass cased round is fired it can tend to stick to the fouling. The recommendation I have heard from some is to simply not mix the steel and brass cased rounds in the same session. However, I also know of one shooter who will shoot mostly steel - but will then run a couple of brass cased rounds through to pull some of the fouling out of the chamber.

Contrary to what many believe, but according to the test "Box O' Truth" performed some time back - the reliability issue never was one of painted vs. polymer. What's more - their test was on 5.56, so it may not even be much of an issue with 7.62x39.

As for me - I'm through with 5.56. I never was particularly fond of either the round or the AR platform, so I sold my AR-15 last month. From now on I will stick to my SKSs, Norinco AK and 7.62x39 Micro Galil (or the FAL or the Garand - depending upon the application).

For my purposes, I much prefer the punch of the .30 round to the "sizzle" of the .22.

Just my 2 cents.

Good new's for you my friend, MSAR is now selling their rifle in a 7.62x39mm. I do have their rilfe in 5.56, and have fired over 2k of almost all Wolf steel ammo without a hitch...........

Actually jetskrtal - it was your build (and Jeff's praise for the 7.62x39 as the ideal caliber for a build of this type) that largely prompted me to make the decision to get one of my own.

In fact, the bottom picture is currently my computer screen background.

Wolf is too weak to cycle my Galil relialbly. A gunsmith suggested that if I shot enough hot ammo (XM193?) through it that the gas port might enlarge enough to run Wolf.
